It's what we teach for the NRA courses as the safest way for storing your firearms and ammunition. There is no downside to it (other than more space being needed). These are the ways we explain the reasons for it.

I pretty much just buy ammo whenever I find it at a good price. But, I also use it as an instructor to teach people. I honestly don't know how much .22 lr and 9 mm I have, but it's a lot.
