Bad luck, not valuing the proper attributes and metrics.

Paul Alexander.

Back when he came into the coaching ranks, the C position was one that could easily be filled by late rounders and UDFAs.  When the truth of the matter is that only a few NFL day 1, starter material Centers come out of college each year.  Other teams have gotten wise to that fact, and they are taking the best Centers in the early rounds.  Compound that with the idea that PA may be a tad overconfident in his ability to "coach up" a guy, and make him starting material.

Good centers are hard to find. 
There are about 5 centers drafted a year. 2014 was an extreme outlying year with 10.

The only positions with fewer drafted players per year? Kicker, Punter, Long Snapper and Full Back.

We have never really been in a position to draft one. 

The last line of what you wrote Sunset can literally only be applied to the center position. Otherwise he has one of the best track records of any coach in the league.

Moore is only 26 years old and has only had one bad season in the NFL.  His first three seasons he had over 2000 receiving yards, 17tds, and most impressively averaged almost 16 yards per catch (15.8 avg).

Moore was not the #1 WR with the Raiders, Darius Heywood-Bey was.

In 2012 when Moore had a season (51-741-7) as good as Marvin Jones 2013 season (51-712-10) the Raiders had fewer passing yards and tds than the Bengals did in 2013.  But even if Moore's catches were due to high volume chances that does not explain why he was able to have such an impressive yards per catch average.

From 2011 through 2013 only 4 other WRs in the league had more receptions than Moore, more tds, and a better average per catch.  (Calvin Johnson, Vincent Jackson, Jordy Nelson, Torrey Smith).


The fact that no other teams seemed interested was a cause for concern, but the Bengals have had so much success with the guys cast off by other teams That I still had high hopes for Moore.  Not a star, but a solid #3/4 WR who can beat single coverage.

they have had some speedy return men in camp the last few years (UDFA's)... but they never seemed to see the light of day come preseason. maybe hurt or what have you.

Right but it goes back to they have never tried to get better at the spot. They are happy with a mediocre return guy who offers no positional value.

Glad it was not just me wondering how much of a shot others were getting when Tate was out there so much.  Like you said, we already know what he can do.  It's not like he is going to change after these last few years.  Give guys enough shots to really see what they can do.  And with first team guys, not the guys that are going to be gone.
