78th Anniversary of VE Day
#1
78 years ago today our fathers and grandfathers celebrated the end of a hard-fought war to conquer Nazism and fascism. It is mind-blowing sad to see the rise of these two right-wing extremist ideologies again. It is even sadder to know they are on the rise here in the United States. It is appalling to know that these groups are seemingly embraced by one of the major US political parties. Today's Republican Party is not the party of yesteryear. Some may give lip service to denouncing anti-Semitism. white supremacy, misogyny, etc but actions speak louder than words. The leader of the party openly embraces authoritarian dictators while denouncing democratically elected leaders. We have members of Congress openly speaking in front of groups who expound these horrible ideals. You have Republicans all over the country undermining our election system with unfounded lies. They are using those lies to pass laws in an attempt to suppress the votes of presumed opponents to their agenda all under the guise of "voter integrity. They are using lies to undermine the American public education system. Many don't hide the fact they want to turn the United States into a Christian Nationalist country. These ideas are not the America our Founding Fathers once dreamed of. They would be appalled to see the wholesale gun violence that has arisen with the new interpretation of the 2nd amendment. In the past governments acted when there were shootouts in the public steets...now all they offer is thoughts and prayers. I have heard it said the 2nd amendment exists to prevent governments like we saw in the 1st rise of Nazism and Fascism. Now they are using it to allow those types of government to rise

The cry of the post-Holocaust world was "never forget" . Well guess what....we did

Fueled by the pursuit of greatness.

Oh and it’s the 78th anniversary of something.
“History teaches that grave threats to liberty often come in times of urgency, when constitutional rights seem too extravagant to endure.”-Thurgood Marshall

Excellent post, but don't be surprised if some start shooting the messenger. In case some have difficulty connecting the dots . . .

I'm not sure "forgotten" is the right word. It's just that some are switching teams.
