Each year in March, the NFL awards 32 additional draft picks, mostly to teams that lost more free agents than they signed from the previous offseason. We were 1 slot away from getting a 3rd for Jones.

The good news is that Whitworth and Zeitler...if they leave...and possibly Kirkpatrick should get 3rd Round picks.

Imagine the irony if Whitworth actually signs with a real contender and takes less money leading to a lower pick.

That would be a giant middle finger to the Bengals.

That's quite possible.

Maybe Whit doesn't decide until he sees what the Bengals do with the other guys.

Mitchell Schwartz makes $6.5 million and got the Browns a 4th.

Meanwhile, 7 spots down, Chase Daniels is making $7 million and it's granted as a 5th.

Even Travis Benjamin made more money and he was lower than Chase Daniels.

The Steelers got a 3rd round comp pick for Kelvin Beachum because on paper he signed a 5-year $45m contract. In reality, it was a one-year contract for $5m (with only $1.5m guaranteed) with a 4-year $40m option. Beachum has already been released. Meanwhile the Bengals only get a 4th round pick for losing Marvin Jones, whose contract was $20m guaranteed. Jones' 2016 cap hit was also larger than Beachum's ($6.6m to $5.3m).

It's a complex formula that they use that factors in losses and gains in free agency.

Ironic that we try not to sign free agents and end up getting a higher pick...and it backfires.

In reality they are 4th round picks, they come after the 3rd round is complete.

Comp picks are very overrated when discussed because in reality they are truly 1 round later than what is awarded.

Hobs gets all excited about these valuable 3rd round comp picks, but they aren't 3rd rounders in the truest sense of the word.

Yeah, except if Whit leaves we'll have Oggieboggie boy doing his turnstile impersonation on the left side and if Zeitler leaves no one to compensate for Bodine and Fisher on the right side. Meaning we can expect another year of a piss poor running game and a beat up QB. All for a couple of late 3rd round picks in 2018.

Whoop-dee-doo

I say we re-sign Whit and Zeitler, then sign a RT in free agency and let's start running the f'en ball and giving Dalton some time.

That's what they should do. In reality...the propaganda that they are putting out about only having $15 million to spend...would indicate that they may not keep either Whitworth or Zeitler...let alone sign a RT.
