Changing of the tide?

I'd wager it is mostly due to the apathetic youth of today.

Well you hear youth going to a more libertarian mindset. So it makes you wonder. I would love for the youth not be lockstep with either of the two parties.

Actually no, it's very simple to understand if one possesses a small amount of knowledge of human behavior and a fair amount of common sense.  Young adults, in general, are rather more interested in just about anything other than politics.  That is, until they have something to get fired up about.  Obama was a good example of that.  Eight years of right wing governance, at least at the executive level, coupled with the idea of our nation's first black president charged the young adult vote.  In direct contrast we have the present day, six yours of moderate to left leaning governance.  Just about every social issue of note has lately broke the way of the left, gay marriage being paramount.  Young adults see things going their way, or at lest the way they'd like to see things go.  Consequently, they have nothing to get fired up about.  This concept is why neither party will stay on top forever.  Voters, not just young adults, get apathetic if they have nothing to rail against.  The GOP will one day, soon, wisen up and realize it can't rely on an aging white voter base and will change a few of it's platform issues, or tweak them at least, to win broader appeal.  Rinse and repeat.

All that being said the current young adult population leans heavily Democrat, and largely because of the GOP's hide bound approach to social issues.  So don't let your pants get too tight over this.
