DON'T PANIC

This is long, but very interesting. It is a discussion about population growth, projections, and how sustainable it really is. I know it's a lot of time commitment to watch, but some of you will enjoy it.

Added to my "watch later".

I got 2 hours sleep and have been up since 1:30am...I think I need to be a little more awake for that! Smirk

Is this something one can just listen to? My commute is around an hour and I could throw it on, but if there are visual things that need to be seen I would rather not do that on the road.

There are some visual components, so it is better watched than just listened to.

Not sold. People reproduce and medicine gets better. Population growth is not going to magically level out due to people having less kids. We live longer and multiply. One family having 6 kids and 2 live is less than 7 families having 2 kids and 2 live. Not to mention what it does to natural selection.

If the solution to climate change is the wealthiest 1/7 sharing their resource consumption with the other 6/7 we are f'd in the ahole.

Uh, yes it will, and there is nothing "magic" about it.

how so?
I'm living a long time and still multiplying myself. There is nothing that says I am not allowed to reproduce after xx age or I'm only allowed 1 child etc.

Not sure what your point is.   You said "if people have less kids".

In most places in the world couples are only have about 2 kids.  When you figure in the number of those kids who will die or never have kids of their own then you come up with zero long term population growth.  It will continue to grow as the people alive now live longer, but long term it will stop growing when the current zero growth generation reaches maximum age.

You did not watch the video, did you?

If everybody turns in to Japan maybe. But i still dont comprehend the math. If ii took 7 billion lab mice who were all genetically engineered to have two offspring. And I improved their chances of a longer lifespan. And sat back to watch what the popluation would do. It would exponentially increase.

I dont think it is going to level off. It may slow.

A massive disease outbreak. Climate change forcing massive migrations and land wars. Famine and lack of clean water has a better chance at evening out population growth.

We have disease resistant designer babies on the way and fertility drugs popping out quadruplets etc..

Then again i could be all wrong and VR porn with robot sex machines completely diminishes the number of people reproducing.

The global fertility rate right now is roughly 2.5. Industrialized nations are in the sub-2 range, so they are dragging the overall fertility rate to 2.5 even with some countries, like those in Africa, running still in the 4+ ranges. We will see the global fertility rate continue to drop as the developing nations reach the industrial and post-industrial stages. The exponential population growth is only 2 centuries old, and that is thanks to fertility rates not matching the improved lifespan. Industrialized nations, the colonizers that had the industrial revolution early on the backs of the still-developing nations, have dropped their fertility rates to match. The same will (likely) happen in the rest of the world as it progresses.

Seriously, if you watch the video he explains this and how the population will probably cap at around 11 billion.
