Dan Hoard's observations from practice
#41
Maybe he’s just giving “other”. Not white, not black. Mexican!

I don’t see any real resemblance outside of them being ……… well I’ll leave it at that.

Yoshi is Japanese born tho, not of Mexican heritage. Just for the record. So I don’t even see the features as being similar. But some would assume he was maybe Mexican. And for those maybe there are similarities.

Associating any player with Hernandez is a low blow. So I too was confused as to why he was even thought of in any association (or at all really) with Yoshi.

Why is Trent not at OTAs? I don't like that..

The two are NOT the same thing lol and sure he looks SOMEWHAT like Hernandez in that shot, but a passing resemblance is all that is remotely there, on a heavily shadowed and obscured picture.

Not even close, in reality.

Ok, I'm not going to argue semantics with you. When I said "vibes" I was simply pointing out that in those two pictures I think they look a lot alike, and so do the people I was sitting around in the office. To me, the resemblence is mostly in the eyes.

I know Yoshi is not Mexican. I don't know his heritage, it is not important to me. With a name like his, I took him to be European. Nobody assumed he was Mexican.... really? Andrei Iosivas is not even close to a Hispanic name. If someone told me to look at that name and guess, I would probably say Greek. And stating they kind of look alike is not comparing them in any association. Really taking huge leaps there.... nice try though.
On edit: Just looked it up, his mother is Philipino and his father is Romanian.

Really excited about Mims and Burton, both are getting a lot of work with Trey Brown, Tee and Ja'Marr not being around.

Mims and Burton have looked good. As have the young DT’s. Good to see that out of the first 4 picks.

It’s only ota’s but you like to at least see the rookies looking the part.

That's what I want to hear.

Does anyone have a handle on what Reader was like as a rookie?

His stat line for rookie year says he played in 16 games with 7 starts, had 1 PD, 1 SK, 22 T, 2 TFL.

Yes, really like the DT's we got in this Draft as well. Kris Jenkins and McKinnley Jackson move crazy well for men their size...

Especially McKinnley. I think this guy could be a steal if he keeps looking like this even as a rookie.

Was thinking it would take some time with him, but I expect him to be better than Tupou and Jenkins to be better than Carter as rookies.

McKinnley could definitely do that.

Thanks for that Sunset.

I am hoping and praying that Jackson mirrors and exceeds my favorite defensive player of the last several years.

I feel like our draft is very boom or bust from top to bottom.   But I've got a really good feeling about it.

The last drafts were pretty safe so maybe they felt the need to swing for the fences. This draft was boom or bust, but it's time we had some booms so I get their gamble.

They didn't gamble on character outside of Burton which..... I don't want to excuse anything. but from all accounts was more immaturity then anything, they gambled on potential and projection which is a gamble, but not the character gambles we saw under Marvin.

I don't really agree here.

I mean, I get there were some gambles in some areas. Burton's maturity. Health/availability for Mims and All. But let's not get confused, these guys were productive players at the college level. Not raw prospects who need development.

I believe Mims was the only OT with 400+ pass pro reps who didn't even allow a QB hit, much less a sack. Playing in the SEC, mind you.

Jenkins was a captain for the national champions Michigan and is an elite run defending 3T with great strength. Right now. Yes, the pass rush needs some work. But that's what Rankins & Hill are for.

Jackson was a captain at Texas A&M and was the #2 NT in the draft. Many thought he outperformed Sweat at the Senior Bowl. The idea he is some huge reach has not made much sense to me from jump. Thrilled to get him as a 3rd comp pick.

Newton was a multiple year starter for a TCU team that made the title game 2 years ago. Team captain.

All was a captain at Michigan before transfering to the TE factory at Iowa. He'd have been picked higher without the injury.

McLachlan & Lee were certainly productive players. Burton, too.

From a football perspective, I am not sure there are a lot of risks here. These guys can play. The risks are more off field (injuries/maturity).

It's hard for me to say this is anything but a high risk draft when Jenkins is the only "safe" pick in the first 4 rounds.

Mims has had a number of relatively minor injuries that seem to keep him off the field.  Nothing that raises long term health concerns, but you have to wonder why he's always hurt and question his desire/ability to play through pain.

Burton, of course, has his maturity issues.  Nothing that really makes you think he we will be an off field problem, but things that make you question how well he will develop, chemistry with other players, how contract stuff will go, and if he will allow himself to become a distraction.

Jackson has been a team captain.  He also has a felony drug arrest and team suspension.  He's a guy that you have to worry about being an off-field distraction.

All, geez, but when I hear neck surgery, that alone scares me.  Then you throw in all the other major injuries on top of it and it seems like a long shot he will last through his rookie deal.
