Dansby and Maualuga Worst Strarting LB in NFL
#21
(10-21-2016, 10:08 PM)wolfkaosaun Wrote: Dansby is a much better cover linebacker in zone than man to man. Guenther plays a ton of man to man coverage with linebackers on tight ends or running backs if they don't drop back into coverage.

In Cleveland, Dansby was more of a zone coverage guy who relied more on instincts and reading the QB rather than following the runner.

He has been a disappointment this far, even in zone coverage, but he's much better in that. Although, he has been our best run supporter this season when it comes to linebackers.

Wrong.  I learned from the Game Day threads that the only thing he does is run zone coverage, primarily in a prevent defense Ninja

Do you understand a curl/hook zone concept and responsibilities? How about responsibilities for a Tampa 2 MLB when facing an un balanced formation? Maybe explain how receiver count changes responsibilities based on the zone called?

My guess is you understand none of what I just said (like most fans), and therefor are basing your observations off really little more than casual observation of guys running around on a football field. Everyone is free to talk about football here, it's a forum of course, but if you want to decree someone horrible and "the worst" you may want to know what you are actually talking about.

Im guessing having zero impact on a play, missing tackles n taking the wrong gap of where the running back is going   is not Maualugas assignment.

Wasn't Rivers an early pick at LB and Pollack was brought in as a LB.
Wts, I do somewhat agree.

IMO Rey M. cannot stuff the run (like he is supposed to be able to) and he certainly cant cover.  Dansby was brought here to play Pass Defense and he is absolutely terrible at it.  he also cannot stuff the run.  Neither LB provides us with any redeeming quality whatsoever.

I don't know but does it say anything when your defensive coordinator used to be your linebackers coach and it's arguably the weakest position on defense. Maybe Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis wanted to finally hire a coordinator they knew would never get offered a HC job elsewhere. Same goes for Zampese.

At least Dansby has played better for us than Harrison or Hawk did.

Me too!  Marvin rarely allows rookies the ability to learn on the fly, fearing they'll blow assignments and hurt the overall concept of the play.  But I see that as no different that a lack of execution.  Both end with the same result.  I like Dansby and wish we had him in his prime, but it does look like his ship has sailed.  Age catches up with all of us sooner or later (thank god for Viagra!).

In a perfect world, Burfict would take Maualuga's position as the two down sledgehammer MLB with two Luke Kuechly-type players flanking him.

Agreed 100%.  Have Vigil and Vinny Rey flank him, that is the best we have right now...maybe Flowers rotating with Vinny at SAM.  And Nickel?  It should be the speedy Vigil.  What good will this season be just watching.  Dude played a ton in the preseason.  He needs game experience so he can contribute down the stretch.  Maualuga should be regulated to short yardage and goal line.

Not surprising lolz. Hated the Dansby signing with a passion. He's too old. The jets game showed he clearly lost a step. Would have loved if he came here two years ago instead of going to the Brownies Whatever

It's a numbers game...

Yep, and Tom Brady was making a fraction (literally, about 1/100th) of what Drew Bledsoe was making, and a smart coach stuck with him even after his much more expensive QB had returned healthy.  Seattle never even went with their much more expensive QB (Matt Flynn) over 3rd rounder Russell Wilson (again, for a fraction of the cost).

Both those teams won Super Bowls.  It appears to be a numbers game that the Bengals aren't winning.

Wrong.

Last year Dansby had 108 tackles and 3 ints.  According to Football Outsiders he was a top 5 cover LB in both '14 and '15.

Maybe the 3-4 scheme was good for him. The 4-3 not so much. Sad

Hasn't he played in both schemes? I'm not positive.
