New Mexico's Democratic Secretary of State has tried to bring back the concept of straight party voting on ballots soon after Gary Johnson joined the Senate race was what may be the most serious Libertarian attempt to join the Senate in US history. Democratic voters make up 46% of the state while Republicans make up 30%. The move would let voters select a slate of all Democrats or all Republicans before moving down ballot.

Johnson maintains the economic credentials of a libertarian along with a soft social stance, having preached for gay marriage and legalization of pot well before many Democrats were. He firmly supports a woman's right to choose and the legality of abortion, distancing himself from the radical wing of his party. While this may not be enough for the state former Governor to attract enough Democrats and Republicans away for a victory, he apparently is making the state's leading party worried enough to react this way.

Independents and the GOP in the state have teamed up with some Democrats to oppose the move. Republicans, while also vulnerable to losing votes to Johnson, worry that this hurts their candidates down ballot, where some independents may vote for them even if they voted for Democrats up ballot.

Straight party voting is just bad, plain and simple. And the party establishment wonders why they lose voters when they pull shit like this, which is decidedly not democratic.
