Besides, lots of unprecedented things going on this week. 
I think it's a bit silly, but the main thing I take away from the outrage is that conservatives can see a gun (or gun culture) as a mere object that is directed only by the human user, but a participation trophy (or participation trophy culture) is an object that can and will cause irreparable harm to someone and should be banned for the good of the country.
As someone who has never used a gun to commit a crime and someone who has been given participation trophies, yet managed to not become a completely delusional loser, I can't help but feel like a bit of a badass.
