Drew Sample is a Bum

Uzomah is a solid, well-rounded TE who can put up 500-700 yards a season if he's the primary TE.
He was definitely on pace for that before he went down to injury.
While that's not great in today's era of pass catching TEs, it's still much better than 400 or less.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Patience has paid off!

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Elgton Jenkins and Erik McCoy were both chosen after the pick we traded down from.  Either one would look fantastic in stripes, with Hopkins shifted to G.

The 2018 Rams threw for over 4500 yards and their leading TE, Gerald Everett, just had 320 yards.

Do you mean Sean McVay's system?  (Let's be fair, I haven't heard anyone call this Dan Pitcher's system.)

Also, they had 3 legitimate weapons in Robert Woods, Brandin Cooks, and Cooper Cupp.  Not to mention they had one of the better receiving backs in the league at the time, with a healthy Todd Gurley.  That's going to limit TE use.

We have on the other hand, only 2 legitimate weapons in Boyd and Higgins, and don't use the RB in the pass game a whole lot.  That should allow for more TE use.

Let's just assume Taylor system is McVay's, and it's by design we don't use the TE.  Then why draft one in the 2nd round?  Why not say to your scouts or GM's, "Guys, in my system we use the TE to block and to check down to once or twice a game".

It's complete idiocy to draft a TE there to produce in this way.

Some other team might have taken him in the 2nd round if we didn't.  Every year there is a list of players who get drafted either much earlier or much later than the "draft experts" predict.

And if they did it would have been just as stupid by them. This is not a defense of the pick. It also would have been no big loss if he wasn’t there for us a couple rounds later.

Unfortunately, Hopkins didn't win the starting job until TC.  Price was headed into year 2 and expected to show improvement.  They weren't drafting a C in 2 after spending their 1st on one the previous year.

We can't?  Since when?

2016...2nd round WR
2017...1st round WR, 2nd round RB
2019...2nd round TE
2020...1st round QB, 2nd round WR

Pull up total snaps by TE rankings.  Then pull up total routes run by TE rankings.

When you compare that with where he ranks it's paint the picture most of us can see, because we actually watch the games.  The guy is a complete non-factor, and a terrible draft pick.

Here's his ranks among TE's:

Yards - 30th

Receptions - 26th

Targets - 27th

TD's - Dead Last.

All of this despite the fact he's playing more than all by maybe 3-5 TE's in the entire league.  All this despite playing on a team where they throw the ball more than anyone else, and where his other legitimate TE competition got IR'd in week 2.

He played well in that first game against Cleveland this season and I started to actually like him after laughing that we took him in the second round.

But it seems like he has no place in this offense other than being a pseudo offensive lineman or something.

It very well could be that he's simply being schemed out of the offense intentionally. With wonder boy as head coach anything is possible.

That's more of a commentary on people who act like we shouldn't draft anything except OL, DL, and LB on the first two days of the draft.

Bengals are the only team with 3 WRS with at least 60 targets.  (only 27 WRs in entire league with at least 60 targets)

And we use our RBs more than most other teams in the league.  There are only 17 RBs with at least 5 games played who are averaging 4 targets per game and the Bengals have TWO of those 17 in Mixon and Bernard.

Sample was right there when Higgins fumbled. I would think you should be anticipating a fumble in case it happens instead of standing there watching the guys get stripped of the ball and then not be in positions to recover.

Do you like argue just to do it?

Of everything thing in that post that's what you had to pick out?  Who gives a shit?

Fine let's say you're correct.  Does it change anything else said?

Not really.

Move along troll.

I'm glad someone else caught it.

I literally laughed out loud at how awkward and unathletic he looked.  Ball gets lobbed all of 5 feet, and he spazzed out, dropped the pass, and tripped over his own feet.

He's primarily used as a check down option, though, and how often does Burrow have time to go through his progressions down to the check down option?

He's far from great, but he at least catches the ball and gets positive yardage when his number is called.

You can tell from how they use him and when he gets targets Sample is not high on the offensive game plan as a receiver. He does what Zac and Not Bill ask him to do and does it well.

If its 3rd and 8 and  everyone is blanketed downfield
And Sample is the checkdown .....ok he catches the ball
But only.gets 6 yds.
Yeah its postive yards. But still is short of a 1st down.
Most completions downfield are positive yards arent they+

If your 2nd RD pick at best is a checkdown option.
Hes a bust.
Meanwhile the rest of the North are using their TEs
To feast on lbers and safeties.
Ours is a checkdown option.
Great pic Husker QB Zac

My point exactly.  This is otherwise known as being a bum.

You can go find some guy in round 5-7, or find him off the street, to do this.  You don't invest a 2nd round pick in a TE that can't stretch the field at all.

If your TE can't run a Seam Route then he's a dime a  dozen.  This guy is an absolute nobody.  He would've been a bad pick in round 4.

If they're asking to be a complete bum then we're in complete agreement.  He's doing it extremely well. Wink

No it isn't.  It is playing the role the coach gave you.

Wes Welker was not a "bum" just because he only had 29 catches his first two seasons with the Dolphins.  That was just the way the Miami coaches used him.

Why are yo so obsessed with making Sample a bum?  He is just doing his job.  If you laugh out loud when he messes up what do you do when he makes a tough one-handed catch?  Go crawl under your bed and whimper?
