ESPN's Arthur Ashe Courage Award and the dropped ball
#41
Can't everyone who is upset Lauren Hill didn't get it throw some money into a hat and create an award to give her? I'm not trying to sound like a smart-arse here, but quit complaining and do something. If everyone who was so upset about the Jenner thing responded by donating to whatever person/people he/she thought was more heroic's cause instead of belly-aching then we'd ALL be heroes!

I think a lot of it has to do with the notion that gratitude is a finite resource. What? How can you call Caitlyn Jenner a hero when there are so many veterans serving? What? How can you call someone who chooses to join the Army and put his/her life on the line more of a hero than a 6 year old who is battling for his/her life against cancer he/she never chose to have!

What?! How can you call blah blah blah a hero when blah blah blah is doing something I deem MORE heroic?!

SMH......we truly ARE rolling downhill like a snowball headed for hell......and that clown is out of his/her mind.

"Hey everyone! Look at me! It's ME! Over here....look at ME!"

Talk about starved for attention.....disgusting.

According to an unnamed source from Radar Online, a tabloid staffed by former writers of the National Enquirer.

It COULD be true...

It's Hollywood, would you be shocked if it was true?  I mean, it doesn't seem too far out of the realm of possibility to me.  Jenner is an attention hound, no two ways about it......

I wish I cared even one iota about all of this. Wait, I don't really wish that.

In the absence of Jenner let's say the award went to Hill. Then you can have people questioning them for trying to profit from a young woman's death, which they most certainly would be doing.

So, what I am getting is there is a contingent here who would rather see ESPN profiteer on a young female athlete's untimely death over profiteering on the gender politics of the day. Sorry, but not the bandwagon I want to jump on.

I'm going to guess that most people's problem with the issue is probably because the one lost her battle and the other got exactly what they wanted.

Did "she" mention anything about the innocent lady she killed on the freeway during her speech?

My problem is ESPN having any kind of award show.  Unless its for what happened on the field its just a waste of time and money.

No, but she did mention a young trans teen who was found murdered and a trans girl who killed herself.

It was really classy.

“You know, it is an honor to have the word ‘courage’ associated with my life. But tonight another word comes to mind and that is fortunate. I owe a lot to sports. It has shown me the world, it has given me an identity. If someone wanted to bully me, well, you know what? I was the MVP of the football team. That wasn’t going to be a problem. And the same thing goes tonight. If you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions, go ahead, because the reality is I can take it. But for the thousands of kids out there who are coming to terms with being true to who they are, they shouldn’t have to take it.

So for the people out there wondering what all this is about — whether it’s about courage or controversy or publicity — well, I’ll tell you what it’s all about. It’s about what happens from here. It’s not just about one person. It’s about thousands of people. It’s not just about me. It’s about all of us accepting one another. We are all different. That’s not a bad thing, that’s a good thing and while it may not be easy to get past the things you do not understand, I want to prove that it is absolutely possible if we only do it together."

I'd prefer a winner that didn't kill someone recently.

Why is Bruce Jenner getting an award from espn? For dressing up as a woman?

1. What's that have to do with sports?

2. Who cares?

He should just start his reality show I know old lady kardashian has in the works for him.
#52
And Lauren Hill would have been the obvious better choice.

As you have demonstrated for us in the past and in this thread, people are still openly hostile towards and discriminatory against trans people. Coming out is a huge deal, especially when you're this famous.

1. She' a former athlete, though it has been given out to people who were not athletes in the past.

2. at least the 17 million who watched her interview with Diane Sawyer.

Lauryn Hill would DEFINITELY have been a better choice, in my opinion. I'm not butthurt about Caitlyn Jenner getting it though, like a lot of folks are. Lauryn Hill would have been my preference though. All bullshit aside, Jenner's speech was great.

Why does anyone care what some sports network gives out, anyway? Sports already have awards shows, they're called championship games/series. The whole awards thing is stupid, IMO, and anyone getting into a tizzy about anything they do is stupid, IMO. The whole thing is ESPN's attempt to get in on the self-congratulatory atmosphere that we get with overpaid entertainers, both on the field and behind the desks, even more than they are. Each award is likely created from dried ejaculatory fluids created while watching videos of themselves. It's pointless.

They couldn't have given it to Lauryn Hill because she is dead.

In my opinion, choosing Jenner over Hill, goes completely against the spirit of the award.  Jenner's sex change is more of a social commentary, than anything to do with sports.

Jenner at one time was literally America's "Golden Boy".  It is significant from a sports standpoint for that fact alone.

Awards are given posthumously all the time.

I still log into ESPN.com and I still watch ESPN so I guess I tacitly support this decision. Oh well. Anyone boycotting the organization? Express yourself with your dollar, it's your only true voice.
