No sincerely, it's a good thing.  I realize you're a little embarrassed, but coming to the realization that it's ok to criticize bad ideas, even religious ones, and that such criticism doesn't equal bigotry or racism is a big step.  I'm a little proud of you.  Hopefully you don't regress.

In all seriousness, though, they may be using the religious excuse but this practice is something that predates Islam in the cultures of their regions by centuries.

It is, but it's almost solely practiced in the Islamic world now.  The swastika used to be solely a Buddhist symbol, it's definitely not viewed as anything but the symbol of national socialism now.

You helped your point even further by neglecting the origin of it in Hinduism, which is where Buddhism got it from since Buddhism is to Hinduism as Christianity is to Judaism.

Regardless of that, if someone actually knows the history of these things they can point outthe flaw in tying it to the religion. It's a correlation v. causation situation.
