Hypothetical 2021 #1 pick

Three of the top five picks are all ex Buckeyes. All that crying for an OSU QB to be drafted by the Bengals this past off-season and you're actually throwing Lawrence into the mix, but discarding Fields? If Joe and Sam were reading your post they would probably smile, shake their heads, and agree with me.

You're an idiot.

Besides, this thread belongs in the Draft Forum.

And you and the rest of the OSU fans (with a few exceptions) are some of the most obnoxious in all of sports. Stay classy Columbus.

But would you like to make a bet on who goes 1st McNeil?

Alright, I'll back off the idiot statement, because you are very football knowledgeable. We both know the schools that are pipelines to the NFL. The Ohio State University, is among the very best. It goes to reason that many Bengal fans are going to be Buckeye fans given the proximity. I don't like Bama or their fans, especially their fan base, but I tip my cap to Saban and crew for what they continually accomplish.

Lawrence is definitely the front-runner, but much can happen in a season. Ts, it would take a catastrophic injury to Joe for Cincy to go QB early. Fields is going to do damage in the NFL. Just as Haskins will in his second season with Mclaurin out of?... OSU

I'm not much of a gambler. I prefer to take a wait and see how it plays out approach.

Well just the record, I don’t “hate” OSU or their players. It just seems you can’t say anything even slightly critical of them without getting jumped on here. My comment about Chase Young disappearing a bit down the stretch last season that Rascal flipped out so much over was actually directly from Anthony Munoz (which I made clear).

Tons of great players come out of OSU. I would never even try to claim otherwise. They’re a powerhouse. If we wouldn’t have needed a QB I would have been extremely excited about landing Young. He’s going to be a stud in Washington. I was also very high on Okudah. And Sam Hubbard is one of my current favorite Bengals.

I guess I could have included Fields in the poll, but this all stemmed from a discussion in another thread where Murdock said we should draft Lawrence if we end up at #1 again. I was just curious how many others would be down for that, but I figured the trade the pick option would overwhelmingly win, which it has.

As far as being an OSU fan just out of proximity? I’m from Cincinnati so I root for UC. And there’s a bunch of people that probably live closer to OU, Dayton, etc. I think of a lot of people are OSU fans precisely because they’re such a powerhouse though, and they want to root for one of the best teams (hard to blame a Bengals fan for that). But people should understand not everyone in this region does though.

I grew up 33 miles North of Dayton. Used to party in the Ghetto as a youth..lol. I root for the Flyers and UC as well. Hell, I root for Toledo, BG, and the and the Bobcats. But yeah, OSU traditionally gets to play on the bigger stage.

Well stated, btw.

Everyone said over and over, you can't trade the #1 pick if you have a chance to take a franchise changing QB.

Well, no season means we don't know if Burrow is or isn't that guy. Is he the guy from his Senior year (sensational but hard to reproduce)? The guy from his Junior year (decent but not a top pick)? Or the guy that couldn't beat out J.T. Barrett or Dwayne Haskins for a starting gig at OSU? (Note, Barrett isn't in the NFL and Haskins is probably the worst starting QB in the league. Did OSU just totally wiff on Burrow or did he just have the stars align for a magical season and will fall back to middle of the pack. Solid, not super?)

None of those questions can be answered without a season. In Lawrence you have a guy that has lost 1 game in his college career. He wins when he plays bad, that is important in the NFL. How many teams play down to their opponent or have off weeks, the great QBs still find a way to win that ugly game.

Cards had Rosen, and never even hesitated to draft Kyler Murray, and it clearly was the right call.

The Bengals if given the chance should absolutely do the same. You are going to get atleast one elite QB from the two of them and the competition should make them both better. Whoever fits your style best and performs best you keep.

As long as neither looks like Josh Rosen (lost and confused) you will get a good return upon trading them.

Long story short, if the league gives you a chance at Lawrence, even with Burrow on the team, you pull the damn trigger. Hell, keep them both if you want, with the rookie contracts, and trade one for a ransom of picks when a team loses a starter at some point which always happens.

The problem with this statement is that there is no guarantee (just like Burrow) that he will pan out in the NFL.

So, simply put, I would trade the pick.  I'm not moving too far down though, depending on the the draft order, just far enough to draft Sewell and probably pick up an extra 1st to do it.

But, watching their games the past two years, that arm is NFL ready. And that is what I really like about him as a prospect. He fits the two way threat as well, since he can hurt you with his feet, but he has a bigger frame and build then a guy like Lamar Jackson, which should allow him to last a little longer in the NFL.

His accuracy is not as good as Burrow's that is true, but accuracy and mechanics can be worked on and coached up, arm strength and athletic ability and vision you just have to have naturally. He has the latter three, can run, has a rocket for a left arm, and does well when things break down using his legs. That leaves it up to a coaching staff to work on his accuracy with better decision making and mechanical tweaks. Overall, like I said, even with Burrow on the team, if you have a chance at this guy you have to take him. You will hit on one, and if you hit on both, teams will be knocking on your door ready to over-pay when they lose a starting QB or have a guy drafted as the heir apparent fail miserably as was the case in Pitt with Mason Rudolph.

To get the best value you would have to be willing to be patient, and that is one area Mike Brown has shown ability.

Daniel Jeremiah, Mike Renner, and Austin Gayle discussed the possibility of Trey Lance from NDSU over Trevor Lawrence as the best QB in the 2021 draft on the Move The Sticks podcast.

Damn beat me to it, i was just about to post about Trey Lance and how some scouts are really high on him, but i think Lawrence will be the 1st pick overall. If we get the first pick you make that decision based on Joe's season, if he played good but the team sucked you trade the pick, if he sucked you trade him and take the best QB available

There’s been some great QB’s that didn’t have good rookie seasons (and they weren’t dealing with a pandemic). Peyton Manning went 3-13 and threw 28 INT’s his first year.

I would hate to give up on a QB with a ceiling as high as Burrow’s that soon.

LOL.  No way.  You can't trade a guy that has had basically no offseason and is being thrown in as the starting QB.  Now, if this was year 2, I would strongly consider it.

Trey Lance is going to be a major gamble - especially if he doesn't play this year.  I've said it before, there just aren't any QBs that have had 1 year of starting experience that make it in the NFL.  It just doesn't happen.

The only way the Bengals go QB in Rd 1 is if Taylor is fired and a new HC comes in that wants their own QB of choice.

Other than that, you take the player that's going to help make the Bengals the most successful team in 2021 and beyond.
Or you trade back if you get more than enough in return, but it'd be damn hard to pass on Sewell.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Patience has paid off!

Sorry for Party Rocking!

I agree, obviously I believe we will be picking way too late in the Draft to draft either of those guys.

Good Lord imagine drafting the QB who has the single best NCAA in history and debating on trading him before he takes a snap.

I know this is all hypothetical but in my eyes Burrow is QB1 in Cincinnati for 2-3 years no matter what happens.

Bowling Green! <3

Still love seeing their stadium, every time I drive down I-75 to Cincy :)

Being a Bengals fan, I too am impartial to Toledo, BG (not Akron lol) and UC, especially since I live out of the country and have no college affiliation; I'd rather see them win, than their opponents.

But Whitworth made me an LSU believer back in 2006 and I haven't wavered since (though Burrow and last year have made me boost them a bit more than I have in the past Wink. And **** les Miles. Loser).

And the cancellation of the college football season begins..

So ***** glad we got Burrow when we did. Now Lawrence and Fields will not have played football in over a year and a half by the time they step foot on a field again. The draft next year is going to be such a shitshow. I feel for these guys, especially guys like Burrow that could've used this season to boost their stock.
Everything in this post is my fault.

If there’s no college season I’d be even more willing to stay where we are and take a guy like Sewell. Having a bunch of extra picks to scout in a situation like that could be a mess.

Parsons and Sewell look special - not a lot of players after them that I’d be happy picking in the top 10.
