JC Tretter retires

He says it is on his own terms but you have to wonder if the league's lack of interest played into the decision. Looks like the Browns will be riding with their 3rd string center for the season

Good. Now the Bengals fans that won’t shut up about bringing him in can give it a rest.

He can always pull a Brett Favre.  Ninja

I wonder how much of this is a reaction to him putting out that public message as President of the Players Association that now was the time for players to push for fully guaranteed contracts.

Hard to know for sure. But he was also critical of the NFL for poor field conditions & player safety issues. And the NFL is certainly not above black-balling people.

He is an above average player at his position who played every game last year and now nobody wants him? Even with the knee issues, does that make any sense?

Not with the State of most OLines in the league

Tretter used his influence as the union head to basically torpedo the Browns off-season program last year.  He had the vets boycotting most of OTA's, put pressure on the rookies to do the same, and what OTA's the Browns did do he negotiated down to teleconference classroom sessions instead of on field work.  I can't really think of a coach or a GM that would want a guy like that on their team.  Great individual player, but he puts you at a major disadvantage trying to get ready for the season.

Didn't know that. Wouldn't want anything to do with him either if this is the case.

These chronic/degenerative injuries can be tricky.  Antonio Bryant only missed 3 games in '09 and played in the last 7.  He had a 116 receiving yards against Carolina in week 13.  He looked healthy enough to get a decent free agent contract from the Bengals, but he never played in the NFL again due to a chronic knee condition.
