For the Bengals to win in 2019 it will rest on the offense. The defense is horrible. The shinning light is Dan Fouts was successful under the same conditions.

Really? Cut the whole defense when a lot of the problems were bad scheme and bad coaching?

I'm glad that Wynn is looking solid to make the team.  Back when we signed him, many were grumbling that the Bengals were trying to recreate the Giants defense from last year.  But really, I think it was just a veteran pick up to send a message to guys like Jordan Willis that it's time to pick up the pace or prepare to get gone.

I so hope I was just a year off, but I do like the addition of Wynn, Lawson back from injury and bigger and Willis progressing. We were best when we had a 8 man DL to rotate the 1st 3 quarters so Geno and Dunlap were fresh in quarter #4 and the other team's OL was not fresh.

I did the same thing...a lot of us did.  And Hubbard turned out to be a real find.  Austin turned out to be a real dud.  After a couple weeks of adjusting to the new "scheme" after his departure, the defense did ok.  They averaged about 20 points a game, and that would be solid.  They did that without Lawson, Glasgow, and others.

What has me most excited about this year's defense is the possibility of a bit more aggressiveness.  More blitzing.  We haven't seen it yet in the preseason (maybe tonight?  Since I think Lawson will play?) but one thing that I have always been frustrated with was our lack of an answer to maximum protection packages.  Tell me if this sounds familiar:

Bengals rush four, play patty-cake, six blockers hold them down easily, QB pats ball, patty-cake continues, QB pats ball, secondary getting tired, QB checks down to a RB or TE for an easy 10 yards.

Well, Anarumo has been working on a 5-man defensive front line with 2 LBs:

Dunlap-Atkins-Billings-Hubbard-Lawson

I want to see that line.  I want to see what it can do to create pressure and, hopefully, create turnovers.

You know, I was considering that maybe I was a touch harsh in my previous post about your fandom...

But yeah, you're a cloudcuckoolander if I ever saw one.

Not only is that an incredibly idiotic thing to say, that may be the most ridiculous and asinine assessment on this board, ALL OFFSEASON.

So I don't take it back; don't let the door hit you and all that.

Our version of a prevent. Only think a prevent prevents is stopping the other team' offense.

I agree and really like Hubbard, I thing he will have a great year. I am hoping Lawson has a break out year as well and Geno and Dunlap get back to their all pro play. I am hopeful the DL can control the LOS against the run, our run defense needs DL to occupy more blockers so our LB's can fill the gaps and make tackles for loss or at LOS versus 5 yards downfield.

I wasn't thinking 85 Bears but I thought we were gonna be a top 10-`12 unit. Hopefully they come up quite a bit this year and I think they will.

I'd like them to look at these sort of looks or a 5-1-5 with their current weakness at LB.

Hubbard has shown flashes of being able to drop back in a short zone if needed, keeping that package versatile.

If I recall correctly, our Dline was fantastic during the pre-season last year and then went on to be relatively mediocre during the season.

I hope we don't repeat that trend this year because, again, our Dline has been impressive this pre-season, as far as pass rushing goes.

They were really good, until the injuries started piling up.  They pretty much took over, and won the Miami game.

Apparently Kiko Alonso may not make the Dolphins. Then the Dolphins also have the ex Buckeye whose name i can not remember right now. Went early in the draft and blew out his knee his rookie year and but played in some games last year. They need DE help

The guy has two career sacks. What exactly do you think that would bring in terms of trade value??

I remember those grumblings. The guy has shown he has some ability and has looked good on D and ST. Unfortunately that leaves Willis as the odd man out IMO. He showed up in the last game, but was it enough? Brown is a keeper.

On the other hand, I would expect a 6th year veteran to look outstanding, with the 2nd teamers, in preseason games.  I don't think that Dunlap or Hubbard/Lawson have much to worry about, just yet..

Precisely; the Miami game was pure madness in the second half, with the dline dictating how the rest of that half went.

As for Hubbard, I truly feel he will max out as a 7.5-9 sack guy at best, but will average around 6-6.5 a year. This is fine, IMO, as he is great against the run and can go inside for specialist pass rushers to go back outside. Pairing him with Dunlap will be fun to watch.

If Dunlap plays with us for the next 5 years (under contract for what? 2 more years?) and Lawson gets a second contract, not to mention Geno, I see our pass rush being arguably top 3 in the league for the next 5-10 years, so long as everyone stays healthy and there is no drop off in play.

Every year, we also have one tweener/scrap heap guy who doesn't really fit in at one spot, but is versatile and plays a bunch of spots, that will contribute too:

Last year: Hubbard
2017: Chris Smith
2016: Will Clarke (then Dingleberry)
2015, 2013, 2012: Dingleberry
2014: No one
2011-prior: Fanene

This year, I'm looking for that guy to be Wynn and if he plays all season like he did last game, I think we can expect some great things from him this year.

Hubbard doing that would make him essentially Michael Johnson. Outside of MJ's 11.5 sack season, he never had a season with more than 6.0 sacks.

As for Wynn, Andrew Brown could also be in play for that hybrid role too.

Enough to get a bottom of the roster type OL or LB from a team in need of DE depth.

If he is a hard cut for us and our DL appears stacked then a team thin at DL would surely listen to an offer.

Correct.

Until 2016 and 2018, MJ ALWAYS had high pass rush numbers, even if he didn't have the sack totals and truthfully, did we ever have a BAD defense when he was with us? Until the last 3 years, the worst year we had in defensive rankings was 2014, the one year he wasn't on the team from 2009-2015

If Hubbard plays 11 years for us, gets 6-7 sacks a year and plays stout run D, there's no problem with that at all, as we have the other pass rushers to make up for it.

If we had nobody and we relied on Hubbard strictly for pass rush and he got only 6-7 sacks a year, then there would be a problem.
