No surprise on the southern states. Really, the only one on this list that surprises me is Nevada.

I've been to Vegas and I'm definitely with you here. 

I've also drive from Great Basin NP in Nevada to Yosemite NP in California, and it was easily, the most middle of nowhere I've ever been.  You could go 100 miles without seeing a gas station, easily.  A place so un-populated seemed like a low-crime place to me, but I guess when we're talking per-capita and the only big city in the state is Vegas, I can see the issue.
