MIKE MAYOCKS MOCK DRAFT
#1
He has us taking Jonathan Allen at 9. Just curious what your thoughts are on this pick. Also he has Balt. taking Reddick which would really suck for us.

I'm kind of meh on the pick. If the draft falls a certain way I'm OK with it. Would rather take someone that makes an immediate impact.

Jonathan Allen at 9 would be amazing. I highly doubt he will be there though, and if he is it's either because of his shoulder scaring away teams (Bengals usually play it safe too so they'd pass if there were real concerns), or because multiple QB's went ahead of us.

Trade down to 14-18, pick up an extra 2nd Rounder. Take McDowell in 1. I think McDowell is better suited to our needs if we go Dline in Round 1. Still, Allen would be a damn good pick. I just like McDowll more. Like I said before, the dude's mean.
Today I'm TEAM SEWELL. Tomorrow TEAM PITTS. Maybe TEAM CHASE. I can't decide, and glad I don't have to.

Allen isn't my favorite pick by any means. Interesting seeing Foster fall out of the 1st round... Idk if he will fall
To the second, but if he does, do we take him?

He has Foster going 10th overall to buffalo

I really like Allen.

He's basically Solomon Thomas with more power.

However, just like Thomas, he probably won't play much end for us as we are a 4-3 team. He could maybe do half time at DE, but on running plays he's a tad bit slow for my liking at end, just like Thomas.

And then there's the issue of his injury problems. If he can't stay on the field, he can't really help us.

Overall, it's not a bad pick at all.

Thomas was an elite run defender in college.

I can understand your concerns about run defense in the NFL due to his length and size, but he doesn't seem slow to me in tape I've watched.

Yea, I think "in college" is the operative term there. I think, when a player is good enough to be a top 10 pick, they can get away with being out of position in college just because they're that much better than the people they're facing.

Similar to Forrest Lamp at LT. He could play it. And he did in college. And he was elite at it. But he is projected to guard in the NFL because he just isn't fast enough for NFL quality pass rushers.

Allen and Thomas I see similarly. Great in college just because they were that much better than their competition. But, in the NFL, when they are up against players just as talented as them, they will be comparatively slow if you consistently put them at DE.

You can put them there on occasion. But they will most likely make their money either at DT or at 3-4 DE.

here's the way i look at it. there is like 5-7 guys I could see us taking at 9 at various degrees of happy. If we get Allen I would be happy because I think he has a lot of potential. This is a talented class and we have lots of options which is a very good thing.

Agreed, but I think Thomas will be able to play 4-3 DE more than Allen because he's 20 lbs lighter and it's reflected in his agility and speed. I think it's a given that if Allen or Thomas is selected they would rush from inside next to Atkins. The Bengals would still need a full-time edge rusher to rotate with MJ on passing downs, and that player could also come in this draft on Day 2 or Day 3.

you can get hung up on measurable's and combine test or you can look at the tape.  Some will like Thomas better, but they don't think he makes it to 9.  If Allen does than why does it make a bad pick to get him ?  The pass rushers in this class are not that great and you could get another guy in the 3rd or 4th to be a pass rush specialist.  Allen makes the team better and fills a need.

As long as he could see the field for 50% of snaps, which is likely given the Bengals tend to play 50+% of snaps in nickel, it is a good pick. I think Allen is much more a DT-only whereas Thomas is a base 4-3 DE that swings inside on passing downs. I like Thomas more because I think he'd see the field more often than Allen. But I guess the nice thing about Allen is that Geno Atkins is 29 years old and has just two years remaining on his contract. If Atkins leaves in FA after the 2018 season, retires before Allen's rookie contract is up, and/or declines, Allen would be a very good fit to take Atkins's spot at UT.

My thing is if Solomon Thomas or Jonathan Allen fall to #9 then you take them. Both guys have top 5 talent. I don't care if they are true Defensive Ends or not. You need impact players and these are two guys that should be at the top of the list. If they are both gone then you can go for a BPA like Howard, Reddick, Foster, or even John Ross if that is how high they have him ranked. But my 1a and 1b choices are Thomas or Allen falling and improving our defensive line since we know the talent isn't there this year to improve the offensive line and they are going to see what Ogbuehi on the left and Fisher on the right are capable of.

I agree with this completely. These two might not fit the prototypical 4-3 rushing End but either one would help us immediately.

Both are good at stopping the run as well, unlike Barnett.

Who takes him? If he's gone before 9, I think it's NYJ. I think Tennesse MIGHT but they desperately need defense. Carolina might but they have been pegged heavily with a RB.
