You are correct.
I forgot we used to play a modified system, where we used 2d10.
We had fewer critical hits, but also less fumbles.
It seemed a bit more realistic and kept new players from being dejected.

Friend of mine was in the VAARNG and did a couple of tours in Iraq. He spent a good bit of his downtime gaming with fellow soldiers.
