Man Threatens Spanish-Speaking Workers: ‘My Next Call Will Be to ICE’

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/16/nyregion/man-threatens-spanish-language-video.html

The video shows a middle-aged, athletic-looking white man berating both customers and a manager at a cavernous fast-casual restaurant called Fresh Kitchen. “Your staff is speaking Spanish to customers when they should be speaking English,” he says. “It’s America.” He adds: “I will be following up, and my guess is they’re not documented. So my next call is to ICE to have each one of them kicked out of my country.”

He said that he was paying for their “welfare.”

Representative Adriano Espaillat, a New York Democrat who was born in the Dominican Republic, said on Thursday that he had filed a grievance with the court system against a man, believed to be a lawyer, who spewed a racist rant at Spanish-speaking workers in a Manhattan lunch spot.

The grievance named the man as Aaron Schlossberg, a lawyer in Midtown Manhattan, said Candace Person, a spokeswoman for Mr. Espaillat. Ms. Person said the name is based on social media and “credible reports.” Mr. Schlossberg, 42, did not return a phone call left at his office, she said.

Ruben Diaz Jr., the Democratic Bronx borough president, joined Mr. Espaillat’s complaint.

I can't help but feel like this guy wanted to go viral. I don't know if he felt like it would bring him noteriety that he could profit off or something.

Good point.  Obviously he's a smart guy, certainly he knows a thing or two about public reaction.  I wonder what he's trying to draw attention to?

He's a lawyer. I can't imagine he's trying to draw attention to anyone or anything other than himself.

Quote:GoFundMe page raises money to send mariachi band, taco truck to troll NY lawyer who threatened to call ICE on restaurant employees

An activist is raising money to send a mariachi band and taco truck to the offices of a New York City lawyer who threatened to call immigration authorities on Spanish-speaking restaurant employees on Wednesday.

A video of New York attorney Aaron Schlossberg went viral Wednesday after he lashed out verbally at workers in a Midtown Manhattan deli and threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Your staff is speaking Spanish to customers when they should be speaking English," Schlossberg says in the video. “My guess is they’re not documented, so my next call is to ICE to have each one of them kicked out of my country.”

Soon after the video's circulation, an activist set up a GoFundMe page, dubbed “Mariachis for Aaron,” to raise money to send a mariachi band and taco truck to Schlossberg's office. The page has raised $1,094 of its $500 goal and credits Twitter account “ALT-Immigration,” an immigration activist account, with the idea.

“Raising $500 to send a Mariachi band to cheer up the staff and attorneys at The Law Office of Aaron M. Schlossberg Esq. P.L.L.C. after a difficult day,” the fundraiser’s description reads. “We are requesting the band to sing the famous, endearing, and warm Spanish children song, La Cucaracha, the cockroach.”

The organizers said in a series of updates to the fundraising page that a local New York mariachi band has offered to play the concert for free, and that they will use the money to pay for a taco truck and “party accessories” like piñatas.

The most recent update says that the date and time of the event will not be disclosed after users of the website 4chan, an online platform notorious for hosting white supremacists and alt-right users, “noticed and want to send people there on Friday to counter it.”

Schlossberg and his offices have faced a wave of backlash after the incident, including a petition to have him disbarred and a stream of negative reviews on the office’s Yelp page

Obviously, but why?  Certainly, a midtown attorney is smart enough to know what sort of outrage and attention his stunt would draw.  I'm curious to know what the purpose behind drawing all the attention is.

It's also possible the guy just lost it and snapped without thinking of long-term consequences.  Just because a guy is educated and has a good job doesn't mean he can't open his big yap, get carried away, and damage his career.  The guy was acting on emotion, not intellect or fact when he started ranting that workers in Manhattan speaking Spanish were clearly on welfare and illegals and so on.  That's the sort of rant your uncle makes at the table at Thanksgiving, not one a lawyer makes in downtown Manhattan.

Bottom line, as smart as this guy could be he sure didn't seem to be using said smarts during this rant. I'd imagine the guy just plain lost his temper and went overboard, simple as that. Then again, maybe Trump will give him a call or something and it'll turn out to be a shrewd business move.

This.

I know plenty of well educated people that we would consider "normal" who have their triggers.  And more than a few that are racist.

I'd wager that BECAUSE he thinks of himself as well educated and polished he thought he was being "smart" when he said what he said.

I will say that I'm intrigued to see if I blow my stack in public and start ranting about crazy stuff people will start saying "Wait...Nate has a DBA in marketing...let's see where that sly dog is going with this." I wish I could pad my resume with that. Yes, my career really took off when I tactfully went on a racist rant that went viral. That was the key turning point in my life and career.

I don't know for sure, but the guy's last name sounds Jewish to me.  I would think that he knows a thing or two about persecution, bigotry and bias.

Something tells me that there is more to this than just a simple racist outburst.  I guess we'll just have to let it unfold to find out.

Maybe he and the Chik-Fil-A guy can start their own business. Together they could offend the entire country.

I recall Chick Fill A getting some heat a few years back for advertising in Spanish to *GASP* increase their market hold with Hispanics in the USA, so I doubt they see eye to eye on this.

I just googled their job openings and for kitchen staff in Alabama of all places it says:

18+ and Bilingual (English and Spanish) applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.

So unless it says "anyone daring to speak Spanish will be demeaned, deported, and kicked off welfare" I'm starting to think we should finally call out Chick Fill A for being the left-wing PC BS machine that it really is.  Communists.

Here is a job for an IT Analyst in Atlanta that says billingual skills are "a plus" rather that "a threat to the USA"

I think I told the story on this board, but it may have been an older version of the board:

I locked my keys in my car while on a sales call.

The customer wouldn't let me call AAA because he "had a guy" who was the best at getting in to locked cars working for him.

The guy failed.

So while I was asking to use the phone a black guy said he would do it for me.  He was there to get work done on his car and him and buddy were so stereotypical looking and sounding I had laughed earlier listening to them.

He failed too.

As we were walking back so I could FINALLY just call AAA he looked at me and said: "You know, I hate to say it, but if we had a mexican here he'd probably be able to do it."  Smirk

My point is I don't think his name would preclude him from being bigoted against someone else's race.

Agree. And who wouldn't lose it, hearing Spanish spoken in an English speaking country.  Librals did this to our land!!

Bad enough we have to pay for their welfare too!  Trump promised he would get rid of them but they are still here. LOL
