While the defense as a whole didn’t live up to their early-season hype, much of that was due to a linebacking corps that gave up more yards in coverage than any other in the NFL. Rookie Jessie Bates looks like he’ll be a stud in Cincinnati for a while after allowing a passer rating of only 59.9 in his coverage this year.

Bates rocks, i wanted him in every one of my mock drafts in the 3rd and i only thought he would fall that far cause of his tackling but he was so much better in this than i thought he would be this year. Great pick. Also think with a better DC and LB coach with some added talent in the LB group we can get back to being not only a decent Defense but a great one.

But they have to make the right moves, we will see.

Bates is everything we thought Iloka may have been.

With Bates, they finally drafted a safety that was big on pass coverage. Usually they get the run stopper guys limited in pass coverage.

I might be the only one but part of me thinks Bates is sightly overrated in a sense. I mean we gave up a ton of deep passes this year and part of it was due to him being over agressive in jumping routes.

i am genuinely surprised by this ranking and don't know what to think. Sure Bates and Williams had some good games, but i felt Jackson took a step back and then there is DreK and Dennard.

It would appear the LB's messed up everything then.

Once we got rid of Austin Marvin as DC cut WAY back on the soft zones. Jackson especially but our other CBs and safeties also are not good in zone but pretty good in man coverage.

Honestly it's not surprising that the Bengals have a very good secondary.

After Austin was fired, the secondary became MUCH more improved. Granted, the cornerbacks need better ball skills, but overall the secondary was the whole decent unit when it comes to defense.

Bates is a great looking young player, and a great draft choice. Everyone pretty well knew he could cover, but questioned his tackling. The sweetest surprise for me was that he was a very sure tackler, and did a fine job in that category also.

Want to know how bad our LB corps was?  The top 6 teams were in the playoffs.

Yep. And only 2 of the bottom 10 teams were.

Similar to the Offensive Line rankings.

If the CBs would have actually been able to get an INT, imagine how many more games they might have had a chance to win.
As much as I think Vance Joseph being the HC would be a disappointment to the fans, him coming back as HC or DC could elevate this defense (at least from a DB turnover perspective).

In the two years that Joseph was the DB coach in Cincinnati, here were the number of INTs from the DBs (and CBs specifically):
2014 - 15 INTs (8 INTs from CBs)
2015 - 17 INTs (7 INTs from CBs)
