Quote:Nearly a year to the day after Staten Island police killed an unarmed father of six who was allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes, the City of New York said it had reached a settlement in the case.

The city on Monday agreed to pay the family of Eric Garner $5.9 million, said Scott Stringer, the city's comptroller.

...

A medical examiner ruled Garner's death a homicide, but a Staten Island grand jury last December declined to indict Pantaleo.

...

Stringer, who has has made a point of resolving civil rights cases quickly to reduce legal fees, said the settlement "is in the best interests of all parties." While he noted that the city hasn't admitted liability in the case, he said the settlement "acknowledges the tragic nature of Mr. Garner's death."

This was pretty much a given.  The high profile nature of the case added to the fact that the media has already inundated any potential jury pool with the idea that the police unlawfully killed Garner meant the cities best option was to settle and move on.

Waits for the usual crowd to start crying about how this isn't fair to white people. Probably including a story about a white person getting killed by a police officer that in no way compares to the Garner case.
