Ten percent of Floridians said they believe Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer when asked in a Public Policy Polling survey released on Thursday.

An additional 28 percent responded they were unsure, while 62 percent confidently asserted the Texas senator is not the unidentified northern California serial killer who sent taunting encrypted letters to the press in the 1960s and '70s.

The illogical conspiracy theory — Ted Cruz was a toddler in Canada during the infamous serial killer’s lengthy murder spree — has been around for several years, kept alive by tongue-in-cheek “proof” posted on various social media networks.
Interest in the impossible connection between Cruz and the Zodiac Killer has been so robust, in fact, that it is at the time of writing a top result when typing the words “Ted Cruz is” into the Google search engine.

On Wednesday, Public Policy Polling offered to hand the last question in its poll of Florida voters to so-called Weird Twitter, which had long sought to convince an established pollster to ask its participant their thoughts on the theory.

And the rest is alternate history.

Cruz garners a similar 10 percent from the left-leaning PPP's survey when Floridians are asked for whom they are voting in the GOP primary.

He trails primary front-runner Donald Trump, who garners 45 percent support, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who sits at 25 percent support in his home state, according to the poll.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich places fourth in the poll, with 8 percent support, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, with 5 percent support.
The poll surveyed 464 likely Republican primary voters Feb. 24–25 and has a margin of error of 4.6 percent.

Quote:Michael Savage: Obama Hired A 2K A Day Hooker To Murder Scalia

If you thought Alex Jones was the preeminent Antonin Scalia murder conspiracy theory, you may be wrong. AM hate talk radio host Michael Savage, is trying to nudge his way into the conversation by using a National Enquirer story that claims Obama used the CIA to pay a hooker to murder the 79 year old Scalia.

Quote:In a bombshell world exclusive, The National ENQUIRER has learned that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death was a highly planned “political assassination” orchestrated by the CIA and carried out by a $2,000-a-night hooker! A top Washington, D.C. source said the Feb. 13 death of the 79-year-old jurist at a remote Texas ranch just 15 miles from Mexico was part of a “shocking conspiracy that tracks back to the CIA and the White House!"

I'm not saying every NE story is fiction, but this one seems to be pretty wild. However, Savage jumped on the murder bandwagon with this story like no other and then, as usual, blamed the media for not going hog wild with it.

Quote:Before his interview with Donald Trump yesterday, conservative radio host Michael Savage shared a story from the National Enquirer alleging that Justice Antonin Scalia was murdered by a prostitute working for the government, pointing to the story as confirmation of his conspiracy theory that President Obama assassinated Scalia.
Indeed, Trump shared his own suspicions about Scalia’s death on Savage’s show, “The Savage Nation,” several weeks ago.
The National Enquirer’s report, Savage said, must be true since they haven’t been sued for libel. He said that other media outlets haven’t run with the tabloid’s article because the media is working for Obama, and instead newspapers like the New York Daily News are aiming their “hatred and bigotry” at Trump.

If indeed Scalia, who was still married to Maureen was with a hooker, isn't that a crime and a sin in the religious right orthodoxy? Wouldn't that disqualify him as a juror? Ahh, why go there, John.

I assume the two events are unrelated...but:

Quote:Man arrested for having sex on ferris wheel killed in carjacking

HOUSTON -- The Houston man who gained international attention for having sex while on a Las Vegas ferris wheel in February was killed in a carjacking Saturday morning.

At about 5 a.m. Phillip Panzica was shot and killed inside of his fiancee's vehicle after leaving an adult entertainment club, police said.

The two suspects, Bryant Christopher Watts, 28, and Aaron Jones, 31, were arrested hours later and have been charged with capital murder.

According to Houston police, Panzica was in the driver's seat of his fiancee's Kia Sorrento and she was in the passenger seat at the time.

The victim's former fiancee, Mistie Bozant, told police the two suspects were sitting in the backseat when Watts told Panzica to "come clean" before shooting him multiple times.

Bozant told KHOU-TV, that the night before Panzica's murder, he was bragging about the money they'd made off an interview with Inside Edition to the two men now charged with his murder. Bozant claims she had the $4,000 check from that interview and a whole lot of cash in her purse the night Panzica was killed.

"Philip didn't even have time to talk, the guy just shot him five times in the head," Bozant said.

Witnesses said they saw the suspects exit the vehicle, pull Panzica's body from the car and leave him in the roadway before demanding his fiancee to get out of the vehicle.

Bozant says tried to save Panzica.

"I was like, 'baby, stay with me.' I could still see his heart beating, but his eyes were just glassy," she said.

Panzica died on the scene. The two suspects are now facing capital murder charges.

Police say hours later, officers spotted the black Kia Sorrento speeding down a roadway and pursued the vehicle.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded and the pursuit ended in Concho County, Texas.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Watts and police say he admitted to the carjacking and fatal shooting.

Both suspects were found to have large amounts of cash in their possession.

Quote:GMU law school renaming after Antonin Scalia hits snag

George Mason University recently renamed its law school after the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia -- and then quickly realized the acronym that name created was problematic.

The school first announced it would change the name to The Antonin Scalia School of Law, or ASSoL, after receiving an anonymous $30 million donation on March 31.

Observers took to Twitter to comment on the acronym's similarity to a vulgarity, with many of those tweeting not a fan of the conservative justice.

The school acknowledged the issue in a letter to its students and alumni, writing, "The name initially announced -- The Antonin Scalia School of Law -- has caused some acronym controversy on social media. The Antonin Scalia Law School is a logical substitute."

The school's name change will go into effect July 1, pending final approval by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

Kentucky Derby is racist

Quote:There will not be a Kentucky Derby party at Dartmouth College this year because some students allege that one of the nation’s most prestigious horse races is racist.

Back in 2015, a group of Black Lives Matter protestors targeted an exclusive Kentucky Derby party hosted by the ladies of Kappa Delta Epsilon – calling the event overtly racist and “recreating an Antebellum South atmosphere on the Ivy League campus.”

The protestors accused the party of being a “bastion of racism, exclusion and oppression.” They chanted, “What is Derby? It’s the face of genocide” and “What is Derby? It’s the face of police brutality.”

The mystery of Stonehenge is finally over. We know who built it.
Satanic giants.

At least that’s what Dr. Dennis Lindsay said this week on televangelist Jim Bakker‘s show:

Quote:Lindsay told Bakker that these giants were tools of the devil, who seeks to destroy Israel because “he’s out to destroy God’s creation and his whole plan of redemption and contaminate the human race.”
But Satan wants to “have his own seed and make his own family,” Lindsay explained, and so he created a race of giants who would attack Israel.
“He build his little squatter’s hut up there on the Temple Mount, you know that temple, because he knows what the Bible says about that place,” he said. “I weaved through why and what is the evidence for giant beings on this earth. We all know about Stonehenge, right? That’s just one of hundreds and hundreds of gigantic places around the world that testify that some sort of supernatural power or giants were involved in its construction.

Lindsay said it. I believe it. That settles it.

Quote:Candidate Who Called Obama a Gay Prostitute Loses Education Board Race

Mary Lou Bruner and Keven Ellis are hoping to represent District 9 on the State Board of Education. Northeast Texas voters will pick between the two Republicans in a May 24 runoff election. Whoever wins the nomination will face Democrat Amanda Rudolph in November.

Editor's note: This story has been updated throughout.

In a stunning comeback, State Board of Education hopeful Keven Ellis won Tuesday's District 9 Republican primary runoff over Mary Lou Bruner, who drew national attention for social media posts touting far-right conspiracy theories and other fringe views.

The East Texas Tea Party activist and former schoolteacher had been favored to succeed in the race after nearly winning the March 1 primary outright and accumulating heavy support from influential conservative groups that typically hold big sway in low-turnout runoff elections. But Ellis, a Lufkin chiropractor who presides over the local school board, maintained a double-digit lead over Bruner throughout Tuesday night, and that lead widened as vote returns rolled in.

He ended the night 18 points ahead of Bruner, with the final vote showing Ellis hauling in 36,842 votes, 59 percent, to Bruner’s 25,420, according to complete but unofficial returns.

Ellis’ victory all but ensures his ultimate election to the 15-member state panel that reviews and approves textbooks and sets curriculum standards for the state's more than 5 million public school students. District 9, a 31-county swath spanning northeast Texas, is a deeply conservative Republican stronghold. (Democrat Amanda Rudolph, a Stephen F. Austin State secondary education professor who was unopposed in her primary, will appear on the general election ballot in November.)

The 45-year-old's win comes after Bruner nearly won a three-way GOP primary race March 1, falling less than 2 percent and a few thousand votes short of the 50 percent mark. (Ellis got 31 percent of the vote.) Her strong showing came despite extensive media coverage of her then-public Facebook posts, one of which said she had heard from a reliable source that President Obama worked as a gay prostitute while in his 20s to fund a drug habit.

With Texas GOP runoffs typically drawing the most conservative voters, Rice University political scientist Mark Jones had previously named the 69-year-old from Mineola a favorite to win the runoff while acknowledging a scenario where educators turned out in droves to vote against her.

"It would appear that a perfect storm occurred to defeat Bruner," Jones said in an email Tuesday night. "Superintendents and teachers (and their friends and families) across the district rallied against her due to disagreement with her positions on education policy, the belief she would not be a good representative of the district’s interests, and the embarrassment they felt her election would bring to the region."

Ellis said he felt “really confident that the educators turned out and voted.”

“They saw the importance of this,” he said. “They saw who I was and they saw who my opponent was and they made the right decision.”

Bruner did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Jones also noted the possible impact of a recent decision by an influential Tea Party group, Grassroots America — We the People, to withdraw its previous endorsement of Bruner, who worked in East Texas schools for 36 years, citing inaccurate statements she had made on the campaign trail and an apparent unwillingness to issue a statement correcting them.

In a recent speech to East Texas superintendents, for example, Bruner claimed that half of all public school students were in special education. It was the first time the group has ever rescinded support for a candidate, according to Executive Director JoAnn Fleming.

“Texas escaped an education train wreck tonight,” said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, a left-leaning group that monitors the State Board of Education.

“If Bruner had ultimately won election to the board, she would have instantly become the most embarrassingly uninformed and divisive member on a board that already too often puts politics ahead of making sure our kids get a sound education.”

http://www.courierpostonline.com/story/money/nation-now/2016/06/06/man-sued-30k-over-40-printer-he-sold-craigslist/85478168/

Quote:Man sued for $30K over $40 printer he sold on Craigslist

INDIANAPOLIS --- Selling a used, black-and-white printer through Craigslist seemed simple and straightforward to Doug Costello.

It wasn't.

What the 66-year-old Massachusetts man didn't know then is that he would spend the next 6 ½ years embroiled in a complicated and confusing legal dispute in Indiana over that printer, which, according to its buyer, was broken.

He would find himself liable for about $30,000 in damages. He would pay a lawyer at least $12,000 in his battle to escape the legal mess.
And it all started with a piece of hardware he sold online for about $40 in 2009. With shipping and other costs, the total was less than $75, according to court records.

The printer's buyer was Gersh Zavodnik, a 54-year-old Indianapolis man known to many in the legal community as a frequent lawsuit filer who also represents himself in court. The Indiana Supreme Court said the "prolific, abusive litigant" has brought dozens of lawsuits against individuals and businesses, often asking for astronomical damages. Most, according to court records, involve online sales and transactions.

Zavodnik, a native of Ukraine who moved to the United States in 1987 under a grant of political asylum, sued Costello, accusing him of falsely advertising a malfunctioning printer with missing parts, and pocketing Zavodnik's money. According to a complaint filed in Marion Superior Court, Zavodnik tried to resolve the issue with Costello to no avail, leaving him with no other choice but to take legal action.

Zavodnik declined to speak with IndyStar. In an earlier interview, he said his motivation for filing lawsuits is simple: to seek justice from people who, he said, stole money from him.

According to court records, Zavodnik initially filed a lawsuit in Marion County Small Claims Court, where he asked for the maximum damages of $6,000. Zavodnik lost because he had thrown away the evidence (the printer), court records said.

Costello said he thought that was the end of the legal fight, but Zavodnik filed another lawsuit in Marion Superior Court, where he requested damages for breach of contract, fraud, conversion, deceptive advertising and emotional distress.

"I figured that's it," Costello said of his victory in small claims court. "But no, no, no. Now I'm in another twilight zone."

In 2010, Zavodnik sent Costello, who also was representing himself in the lawsuit, paperwork asking him to admit that he was liable for more than $30,000 for breach of contract, fraud and conversion. The trial court dismissed the case, along with 26 others filed by Zavodnik, who appealed all of those dismissals, court records state.

The Indiana Court of Appeals in March 2012 revived the lawsuit against Costello and sent the case back to the trial court, where it remained stagnant for another nine months until a hearing was scheduled later that year.

Zavodnik also had sent Costello two more requests for admissions. One asked Costello to admit that he conspired with the judge presiding over the case, and that he was liable for more than $300,000. Another one requested Costello to admit that he was liable for more than $600,000.

Because Costello did not respond to all three requests for admissions within 30 days of receiving them, and did not ask for an extension of time, as required by Indiana trial rules, Costello admitted to the liabilities and damages by default. He also did not appear at a July 2013 hearing, according to court records.

Costello said he never received the requests for admissions and was not notified of the hearing.

The case overwhelmed him so much, Costello said, that he finally decided to hire an attorney. In fall 2013, Indianapolis attorney Chad Wuertz, who represents other defendants sued by Zavodnik, filed a motion to withdraw the admissions.

The case lingered again — this time for more than a year — without any significant action.

Wuertz said the case went through several Marion County judges, many of whom recused themselves. At one point, Zavodnik sought to have a judge removed, and the Supreme Court appointed a special judge from Boone County.

Finally, in March 2015 — six years after Costello sold the printer — Special Judge J. Jeffrey Edens issued a ruling. He awarded Zavodnik a judgment of $30,044.07 for breach of contract.
Gersh Zavodnik poses in a room in his home, Tuesday, May 14, 2013, that is full of files for the vast number of lawsuits he has filed. (Photo: Kelly Wilkinson/IndyStar)

Edens acknowledged the amount is "seemingly high" and the judgment "may seem extreme for the breach of contract for the purchase of a printer." But he wrote that he's constrained by how the Supreme Court had previously interpreted a state trial rule, called Rule 36, which sets the 30-day deadline for responding to requests for admissions.

"What kind of reality am I in now?" Costello said of the ruling. "I don't know what's going on. Why don't I know what's going on?"

Costello, who owns a forensic accounting business, appealed the ruling. On March 23, the appeals court issued a sharply worded 13-page opinion in his favor.

The $30,000 in damages "had no basis in reality," Chief Judge Nancy Vaidik wrote.
Zavodnik misused the Indiana trial rule, which was meant to more quickly and efficiently reach a resolution, Vaidik wrote.

"He did not send requests claiming $30,000 and $300,000 and $600,000 in damages because he believes those figures are legally justified and thought Costello might agree," Vaidik wrote. "He sent them because he hoped Costello would not respond, rendering the matters admitted..."

"Zavodnik used the rule as a way to avoid such a resolution," Vaidik wrote.

Costello was on a business trip in Ontario, Canada, when his attorney called him to tell him the news. He said he almost broke down while sitting at a diner.

"I've had this huge weight, this financial and emotional weight for 6 ½ years," Costello said.

Zavodnik likely does not see it that way. A colleague of Zavodnik's who's also a pro se litigant — legal jargon for someone who represents himself or herself in court — spoke on his behalf.

Jesse Clements, who said he and Zavodnik are members of a group of pro se litigants whose purpose is to "end Marion County judicial corruption," said the appeals court ruling was "ridiculous," "irrational," and "opposite to the law."

Clements describes himself as a highly skilled litigant , and Zavodnik sometimes uses Clements' research for his cases.  He said the appellate judges "misrepresented" and "cherry-picked" the issues and facts that support their opinion.

Zavodnik likely will ask for a re-hearing, Clements said.

Costello said he will no longer sell anything online. He also said he has no plan to pursue any legal action against Zavodnik.

"I've had enough," he said. "I don't need him in my life anymore."

But the case is not yet over.

The appeals court ordered the trial court to hold a hearing to determine whether the case should be dismissed "based on Zavodnik's repeated, flagrant, and continuing failure to comply with Indiana's rules of procedure."

That hearing won't be held before Edens, the special judge from Boone County. He, like many others before him, recused himself.

Special Judge Christopher Burnham, of Morgan County, is now on the case.

Quote:Orlando man arrested after police mistake doughnut glaze for meth

ORLANDO, Fla. —

An Orlando man said he's considering taking legal action after he was arrested for having doughnut crumbs in his car.

Dan Rushing said he was wrongfully taken into custody because Orlando police thought the icing crumbs from a Krispy Kreme doughnut was crystal meth.

Police said it was a lawful arrest, and they tested the icing twice with their drug kits.

They said both times it came up as meth.

WFTV sent an email to Orlando police asking if there will be an investigation into the equipment.

A spokesperson said they couldn’t answer that question after hours.

"It's a terrible feeling to go to jail when you have not done anything,” Rushing said.

Rushing’s drug arrest happened in December.

Orange County court records show Rushing was arrested for possession of meth, but the case was dropped a month later after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement tested what turned out to be icing from a doughnut.

"I just don't want this to happen to anybody else,” Rushing said.

An incident report said the officers were called to a 7-Eleven for possible drug activity.

Police said Rushing was pulled over after leaving the store for failing to stop at a stop sign then going 42 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone.
Rushing said he gave officers permission to search his car.

“They said, 'We found what we thought was crack cocaine in the beginning, but now we think it's methamphetamine’" said Rushing.

The report said an 11-year veteran officer found what was believed to be drugs.

The report went on to say the substance was tested twice.

The results showed meth.

"Every other Wednesday, I stop at Krispy Kreme and get a doughnut there. And they found four little flakes of the icing," Rushing said.

Russell asked police how often false positive drug tests happen.

A spokesperson told us "there is no mechanism in place for easily tracking the number of, or results of, field drug testing."

Rushing now has a lawyer and he plans to file a lawsuit.

A Georgia man who won millions in the lottery could face life in prison after pleading guilty to using a portion of his prize to invest in a crystal meth operation.

Ronnie Music Jr., 45, of Waycross, Georgia, pleaded guilty last week to federal drug and gun charges after U.S. attorneys presented evidence that he "conspired with others to possess and distribute kilograms of methamphetamine," according to a statement released by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

"The investigation revealed that in September, 2015, Music’s co-conspirators were caught attempting to sell approximately 11 pounds of crystal meth, with a street value in excess of $500,000," said the DOJ.

Federal agents seized over $1 million worth of meth, a large cache of firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, multiple vehicles, and over $600,000 in cash as part of the case.

"Music decided to test his luck by sinking millions of dollars of lottery winnings into the purchase and sale of crystal meth," said U.S. Attorney Ed Tarver. "As a result of his unsound investment strategy, [he] now faces decades in a federal prison."

Music had won $3 million in a Georgia Lottery scratch off game in February, 2015, according to Georgia Lottery's website.

Music will be sentenced by a judge in the Southern District of Georgia and faces a maximum possible sentence of life in prison.

Quote:Trump Signs Bill That Bars Federal Gov’t From Paying For Oil Paintings

Thanks to the passion of Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), President Donald Trump has signed a bill to nip wanton government spending in the bud—by eliminating oil paintings.

Trump signed the Eliminating Government-Funded Oil-Painting (EGO) Act on Wednesday, the law now banning taxpayer funds from being used for portraits of the President, vice president and members of Congress, along with other agency and office heads according to CNN.

Though Cassidy is touting his accomplishment, tweeting that he joined Congress to “cut wasteful spending,” the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the measure will save less than $500,000 a year due to the limited number of commissioned portraits.

As the CNN report points out, the law would not have prevented the recently unveiled portraits of the Obamas from being painted, since they were funded by private contributions. And despite Cassidy’s conviction that “few people ever see or care about” the oil paintings of government officials, administrators at the National Portrait Gallery had to move Michelle Obama’s portrait to a bigger space in early March, as the throngs flocking to see it have created so much congestion in the museum’s halls.
