ONE PLAYER

You get to rebuild the team around only one player on the current roster....which player do you choose, and why?

Tough call there. I'm stuck between Carlos and Geno. The why is the easy part. IMO, they are both future HOFers.

I would think you start with the QB, in this case Dalton, and build your team from there. Dalton may be here through another contract year.

How do you build a team around a DL?

William Jackson, I guess?

-Passing league
-Still fairly young (26 next season)
-Still on his rookie contract ($2.65m in '18, $3.09m in '19, 5th year option in '20)

I am a bit worried about him not having a large resume to assure us that he will keep playing at that level, but AJ Green and Geno Atkins are both going to be 30 next year, Atkins is in his contract year and will be making like ~$18m/yr after that, and AJ is making big money too. The youth plus contract makes me choose Jackson.

Honestly, with all the shitty drafting lately, it's pretty tough to choose. If they ran a 3-4 defense and we had seen him play in it, I might choose Lawson, but I am unsure of how much value he'll be able to provide as being a role player specialist in their 4-3.

Agreed on Atkins, but there's no way Dunlap sniffs the HoF. He'll be 29 next season, has 2 Pro Bowls, 0 1st or 2nd Team All-Pros, and is t-99th in sacks (less impressive than even that sounds when you realize that they didn't count sacks before '82, and there's more passing than ever now). There is 1 active player tied with him, and 15 active players ahead of him on that list, with a couple more who had just recently retired (Jared Allen 136, John Abraham 135.5, etc). Dunlap is at 64.5, and has only reached double digits once.

He doesn't realistically stand a chance.

For me, it's AJ Green. If I'm rebuilding this team, I would want whoever the QB will be to have a reliable, dynamic weapon out of the gate.

I'd go with WJ3, or Mixon. I prefer youth.

What do you have against building the team around a defensive lineman?

If I only get to keep one, single player, and have to start from scratch on everyone else, I want the best player on the team.  I seriously considered AJ Green, but for his age, he's got a ton of miles on the tires.

But hopefully it's not 2017 AJ Green LOL

Current age or as in you will have their full career in front of them?

If Current age I'd have to go with either WJ3, Mixon, or Dalton.

If they had a full career in front of them either Green or Atkins.

Seeing how the OP specifically stated one player from the current roster, I think it's safe to assume he meant "as-is".

It would either be Mixon or Dalton. I would probably have to go with Dalton because we don't know how Mixon will pan out, and RBs don't have that long of a life in the NFL. Green is too old to build a team around.

If I’m starting a new team and can have one player from this team, I’d take Geno. He probably has 3-5 excellent years left and another 3-5 very good years left. He is a real physical badass. He doesn’t have to worry about losing speed as much as a WR or CB does with age.

Vontaze Burfict: Relatively young, All Pro caliber player, and would give my D instant heart.

I'll go one step further and build the team with current FAs:

QB: Kirk Cousins
RB: Jeremy Hill
WR: Sammy Watkins
WR: Jarvis Landry
WR: Allen Robinson
TE: Austin Seferian-Jenkins
LT: Nate Solder
LG: Andrew Norwell
C: Weston Richburg
RG: Jack Mewhort
RT: Andre Smith

LDE: Adrian Clayborn
DT: Sheldon Richardson
NT: Dontari Poe
RDE: DeMarcus Lawrence
WLB: Tahir Whitehead
MLB: Vontaze Burfict
SLB: Aldon Smith
CB: Kyle Fuller
CB: Malcom Butler
FS: Tre Boston
SS: Morgan Burnett
PK: Caleb Sturgis
P: Kevin Huber
KR: Michael Campanaro

. Don’t you have to factor in his concussion and suspension history?

I'd take WJIII.

We don't have a ton of elite players and our best player, Atkins, isn't at a position you can really build around. But an elite CB that can shut down any 1 target for an entire game is a fantastic piece to build a defense around and would allow us to start over on offense (which we need to do anyway).

Except for Green and, perhaps, our RBs, though they are hard to judge considering how bad our Oline was.

Dalton is an average QB and you don't build a team around an average QB (ideally).

You could theoretically build around Green but WRs don't typically define a team. QBs and RBs. RB is tough to build around because your typical RB has a shelf life of 5 to 8 years, whereas a QB can last 10-15 years if they're elite.

And we don't have any elite DEs to build around. Dunlap is a solid player. Lawson is a "sack or nothing" player, at least at this stage of his career, and we have no elite safety to build around.

My second choice would be Burfict, but he's injury prone and suspension prone so it'd be tough to build around him.

So WJIII it is purely through process of elimination XD.

Boom. Our best two young players.

As much as I love Dalton, Green, Atkins, Dunlap, and Burfict, I’d rather build around players who look to have their best years in front of them, rather than players who will likely be declining very soon (or maybe already are).

I have to disagree on G. Atkins due to disappearing from being double teamed.
