The Browns just traded for Brock Osweiler(?) from Houston and gave them a 4th round pick. The Browns pick up his salary. Looks like the next QB domino to fall in Cleveland. I hope the Bengals aren't this dumb.

As of right now, an absolutely smart trade by the Browns.

The Browns also got Houston's 2nd round pick.  That's actually a good deal for Cleveland.  If they want to cut him next year, they can.  They have the money to absorb the hit.

That being said, Osweiler sucks.

They have a ton of cap room and can dump him next year with no penalty. So they might be able to get a QB, but they also get a 2nd round pick for 2018.

This is actually a damn impressive move by the Browns. You can tell their FO was baseball people before, because NFL FO people simply don't normally think like this.

Browns get:
-Osweiler
-2017 6th Round Pick
-2018 2nd Round Pick

Texans get:
-2017 4th Round Pick

- - - - -

Apparently the Browns are planning on trying to re-trade Osweiler, and just eat his salary to make him tradable. So say they get someone's 4th round pick for Osweiler (after they eat say.. $14 of his $16m salary).

So then the end result would be basically the Browns buying a 6th and 2nd round pick for $14m.

The next QB to fall in Cleveland. A 4th rounder and pick up his salary. No wonder Cleveland can't win.

Yep they're basically going to eat the contract and retrade him for more picks.  This may be one of the greatest moves ive seen in years.

Browns get Osweiler, a 2nd and a 6th for a future 4th. Likely a stop-gap or backup for Cleveland, but they are using their strength (cash) to get other assets (picks). Taking advantage of a team like Houston who didn't want Brock and don't have enough to go add another QB without moving him. I wish the Bengals would think outside the box with moves like this.

Maybe one day they can get a decent QB..

But hey, we might be in the same boat after ours is done for his career.

The Browns don't plan to start Osweiler. Don't be shocked if they try to deal him, or let him serve as the backup for a year and then cut him after the season.

You're looking at it all wrong. The Browns didn't trade for Brock Osweiler. The Browns just paid for a 2018 2nd round pick. Osweiler doesn't matter in the grand scheme. They had over $100m coming into FA, so they're going to eat his salary this year and pick up a 2nd round pick next year for it.

They might even be able to re-trade him since nobody wants a $16m Osweiler, but maybe if the Redskins or someone could get a $2m Osweiler, then maybe they offer a 4th rounder or so.

Either way, the Browns had money they had to use, and they used it to buy draft picks. It's a pretty smart move.
