He was sort of a "replacement" pope, and I nicknamed him Pope Rat Burger. He got some unfair criticism for having been in the Hitler Youth as a school boy, but practically every German kid was in it.

I won't speak ill of the dead.

I will say, as a recovering Catholic, I like the new Pope better.

And I will paraphrase something I read on Twitter a couple days ago about his being sick:  I will offer thoughts and prayers for all the children harmed while he was covering up the priests abusing them.

 Same here, to both points.

The best description I ever heard about Pope Benedict XVI was from his fellow German, Joachim Cardinal Meissner: “He has the intelligence of twelve professors combines with the piety of a child on the day of his first communion.”

Pope Benedict was a prolific author both before and after becoming pope; to say he was a towering intellect would be an understatement. In 2011 he altered the Mass in the vernacular to match the Latin which I appreciate so much. In 2008 he named Archbishop Dennis Schnurr to become the Archbishop of Cincinnati.

May Our Lord receive Pope Benedict XVI into His holy presence.
