Santos admits he lied about everything...still won't step down from office.

(01-05-2023, 11:42 AM)Crazyjdawg Wrote: Well just from that article, you can tell that the author is comparing apples to oranges. The examples they gave just don't line up with Santos.

Elizabeth Warren's claim that she was part Native American was based on something her family has been telling each other and their children for many years. When something is passed down from generation to generation, it becomes harder to verify and I think it's very reasonable that she truly believed she was of Native American ancestry and her willingness to take a test and reveal the results on the internet are evidence of her heartfelt belief, in my opinion. It does seem like her family either lied or embellished, but that isn't necessarily a reflection on her truthfulness.

Biden stating his son died in Iraq is an inaccuracy perhaps but I don't think it reaches the same level as deception. I don't personally know how Beau got Brain cancer. There's a chance that Biden blames Beau's service for some reason. There are reports of burn pits causing brain damage to soldiers as late as a hand full of years ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if Beau's diagnosis was tied in some way to his time spent in Iraq. Now that I check, that is exactly what Joe believes, if you believe Wikipedia:

So, if this was the case, Biden saying his son died in Iraq is essentially true, if not for the single phase "Where my son died." Obviously his son didn't physically die in Iraq, but if he got the cancer from the burn pits in Iraq, then he certainly could attribute Beau's death to his service time in Iraq.

The next example was Biden saying the crash that caused his wife's death was related to alcohol. Again, I don't know exactly what happened on that day; I doubt anyone alive can other than the driver, who would never admit to it. The deaths were ruled an accident caused by Neilia pulling out in front of the tractor trailer. The investigation yielded no evidence that alcohol was involved but that just means it couldn't be proven. There's a chance Biden knows something that didn't make the report due to lack of ability to prove it, but it is also possible that he is just a grieving widower who is looking for someone to blame. It makes sense that he would resent and blame, even irrationally or without merit,  the person who killed his wife and child even if they technically did nothing wrong.

So those are the three examples that this author gives explicit details about as equivocation in their article and all three of them are either disingenuously spun to make the Democrat look bad or are otherwise nowhere near the degree of outright lying that Santos had engaged in.

The author goes on to list a few more abbreviated examples. Biden's arrest in South Africa, lying about his law school ranking, dishonesty about academic credentials etc.  It would be difficult to fact check each and every one of these short quips for accuracy but given the author's established pattern of stretching the truth in the 3 explicit examples, I'm not inclined to believe they are being honest about any of these examples.

Like everything, lying has levels. If you say you were arrested when you were actually just detained in an airport, that's a lie and you should be called out for that, which Biden was. When virtually every single thing on your resume that you used to pitch yourself as a good candidate for public office turns out to be a fabrication, that is a higher level of lie, which should be met with a higher level of outcry (in this case, not seating Santos).

I think most people expect a certain amount of lying and embellishment from politicians. It's their job to sell themselves as the best person for the job they're running for, so they'll say they got better grades than they did, were more valorous than they were or were more compassionate or forward thinking than they actually were. Those are kind of expected in today's politics. Lies that you could realistically believe the person at least convinced themselves were true and/or are somewhat harmless or subjective.

A person just making up a history and saying that they did things they categorically did not do is much different, in my opinion, and if a Democrat did similar things I guarantee you that the voters and the leaders in the party would hold them accountable. The Democrats have a long track record of self policing their ranks. From Weiner's dick pics. to Katie Hill's leaked nude photos and inappropriate staffer relationships to Al Franken's pretending to fondle a sleeping woman, Democrats are very sensitive (some may say overly sensitive, honestly) to public outcry (also known as "cancelling") and will often purge their ranks if a person becomes untenable in the public's eyes.

All we ask is that the Republicans do the same.

Biden was caught in multiple lies/enhancements when running for President the first time in 1988.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/05/that-time-joe-biden-lied-about-his-academic-credentials/

And plagiarizing.

https://time.com/5636715/biden-1988-presidential-campaign/

So he dropped out of the race.

To me the biggest difference is that Santos lied about absolutely everything on his resume and about his personal life and not only won, but the republican party will swear him in as if nothing ever happened.

Remember, Biden blew his first run for the presidency by being caught in a lie.

I don't think we--certainly not the country as a whole--need both sides to lie.
I certainly am not satisfied if "my guy" turns out to be a liar.

I think one side elects politicians that regularly tell massive whoppers and refuse to walk them back.
Those voters then claim "both sides do it" to normalize their own bad judgment.  As if Obama "lying"
about whether you can keep your doctor were no different from lying about voter fraud to contest an election.

Of course McCarthy and the gop don't care...they just voted to gut the House Ethics Committee.

But...

Quote:A pair of House Democrats on Tuesday filed and hand-delivered to Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) a complaint urging the Ethics Committee to open an investigation into allegations the freshman congressman failed to file timely, accurate and complete financial disclosure reports.

Reps. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) and Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.) filed the ethics complaint against Santos on Tuesday and delivered a copy of the six-page document to the New York Republican’s congressional office. Goldman knocked on Santos’s door and entered the office, leaving the complaint on a desk inside.

“In order to safeguard the integrity of federal ethics laws and the House of Representatives itself, we respectfully request that you immediately undertake a full investigation into this matter of George Santos’s failure to timely and accurately file financial disclosure reports and promptly take all other necessary steps to seek appropriate penalties and corrective action,” the complaint reads.

The lawmakers allege that Santos — who was sworn into Congress early Saturday morning — violated the Ethics in Government Act for not filing accurate and complete financial disclosure reports on time.

The pair zeroed in on a number of allegations regarding the congressman’s financial records, including his failure to file financial disclosure forms before the GOP primary, whether he reported interest income properly and if he “engaged in fraudulent activity” through his company, the Devolder Organization.

The complaint brings attention to Santos’s disclosure that he earned more than $1 million in dividends from Devolder per year, noting that financial data company Dun & Bradstreet estimates the company had a revenue of $43,688 as of July 20, 2022.

The lawmakers also pointed out a discrepancy regarding Santos’s ownership of property in Rio de Janeiro. The financial form discloses an apartment in Brazil, but he later admitted to not owning any property.

Torres, in remarks shortly after delivering the complaint, said the pair is asking that the Ethics Committee investigate Santos. If the panel finds that the allegations have merit, Torres said Santos should face disciplinary action.

Asked about the ethics complaint on Tuesday, Santos told reporters “they’re free to do whatever they want to do.” Pressed on whether he is concerned, the congressman responded, “I’m not. I have done nothing unethical.”

“I have not,” he added, when asked if he thinks he has done anything wrong.

The Ethics Committee — which is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans — first must decide whether to launch an investigation. It remains unclear if it will do so.

Goldman told reporters on Tuesday that the pair has heard from some Republicans who support an ethics investigation. He specifically cited Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.), who has called for a full House Ethics investigation into Santos.

The complaint to the Ethics Committee is the latest development in the controversy surrounding Santos, who admitted to embellishing parts of his resume after news reports uncovered widespread discrepancies in his biography.

On Monday, the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission outlining what is says are violations of campaign finance laws. On top of that, the New York Republican is already the subject of probes led by the Eastern District of New York and the Nassau County district attorney.

Additionally, a spokesperson for the Rio de Janeiro prosecutor’s office told The New York Times that it will make a formal request with the Justice Department to inform him that a 2008 criminal fraud case he was involved with is being reopened.

Eight outstanding questions surrounding George Santos

And, a group of four other Democratic House members with backgrounds in national security penned a letter to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday expressing concern regarding “Santos’s access to classified information and potential appointment to any Congressional Committees that may facilitate the use of this information,” citing his “fabricated” biography and other allegations.

Goldman and Torres cited the ongoing controversy — particularly his misleading biography — in the ethics complaint.
“Given the revelations about his biography, as well as the public information pertaining to his financial disclosures, Mr. Santos has hailed to uphold the integrity expected of members of the House of Representatives,” the complaint reads. “We therefore respectfully request that you investigate this matter to determine the extent of these violations and take appropriate action as soon as possible.”

Democratic leaders also weighed in on the Santos scandals Tuesday morning, accusing McCarthy of seating the controversial freshman for the sole purpose of padding McCarthy’s vote tally in last week’s marathon balloting that finally gave him the Speaker’s gavel on the 15th vote.

“He owns George Santos,” Rep. Pete Aguilar (Calif.), chair of the Democratic Caucus, said of McCarthy. “That’s the only reason why he was seated, is to give George Santos that ability to vote for Kevin McCarthy.”

Aguilar said there “should be repercussions” for Santos, and called on state and federal law enforcement agencies — including the Federal Election Commission — to investigate.

“This is an incredibly serious issue from someone who clearly is divorced from reality and sanity,” he said. “But this is at the feet of Kevin McCarthy, not just George Santos alone.”

Out Rep. George Santos (R-NY) mocked sexual assault victims while he downplayed the COVID-19 pandemic in an uncovered interview.
Santos was on the Empire State Conservatives podcast on March 31, 2020, early in the coronavirus pandemic. He claimed that he had gotten COVID – which he called “COVID-19, aka coronavirus, or commonly known as the Chinese flu” – earlier in the month and said that it wasn’t a big deal, he just needed an inhaler for three days.

He said he didn’t understand why a local hospital didn’t have enough room to store all the bodies of people who had died of COVID because it wasn’t a big deal for him so it shouldn’t be a big deal for anyone else.

“Here I am, a perfected candidate to be, you know, R.I.P., and it just didn’t happen,” he said.
“I’m always happy to meet quote-unquote survivors,” co-host Taac responded. “Not that, we talked about the Me Too movement, but…”

“Harvey Weinstein gave me coronavirus,” Santos jokingly sobbed before bursting out laughing. “And I still didn’t get the gig.”

Weinstein, a film producer, was accused of rape and sexual abuse by over 80 women. He is currently serving a 23-year sentence for rape and criminal sexual assault.

Later in their discussion, Santos joked that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has an OnlyFans account.  OnlyFans is a platform for sex workers.

Taac was trying to relate a story about a nurse on Instagram whose name he didn’t remember when co-host Evan interrupted, “What was her OnlyFans account name, Taac?”

“From what I understand, you’re interested in AOC’s OnlyFans account,” Santos joked about the sitting Congresswoman.

“She’s still a very attractive young woman,” he continued. “She takes care of herself. Good for her, OK. She was a bartender. She had to. She had no option.”

Later in the interview, Santos came back to the idea that COVID-19 was Chinese Americans’ fault and said, “I’m not racist against the Chinese population, and I don’t quite frankly think it’s their fault for Chinese Americans living in the United States, that’s not the case here.” He then blamed the spread of COVID on “the immigration system.”

After being elected to represent New York’s Third Congressional District and becoming the first out gay Republican elected to Congress, Santos’ life story came crumbling down as several newspapers reported he never went to the colleges he said he attended, never worked for the major banks he said he worked for, and that he had been lying about his family history as well. He has admitted to many of these lies, calling them “a little bit of fluff” on his resume.

He is also being investigated by authorities in Brazil for writing bad checks, something he
reportedly confessed to in 2010.

Questions
are also being raised about the nearly $3 million out Rep. George Santos (R-NY) raised for his 2022 campaign, with some donors saying they were tricked into believing that one of Santos’s staffers worked for one of the most powerful Republicans in D.C. instead of the political newcomer.

The real surprise is that he is the only Republican freshman who completely lied about his entire life. If you will be supported so long as you are a guaranteed "yes" vote for your party, you can do whatever you want. We should expect more and more completely unremarkable doofuses with fabricated resumes.

People have legitimate concern his name really isn't even George Santos at this point. There are videos of him online using his alias names and it is obviously him, so there isn't any denying it. The stories of people being scammed by those aliases are starting to come out fast and furious and this is just a shitshow now.

Meanwhile he's been placed on two committees already.  And the gop show no signs of wanting him held accountable.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/17/politics/george-santos-committee-assignments/index.html

Quote:CNN —

Embattled freshman Rep. George Santos has been awarded seats on two low-level committees after House Republicans debated where to put the New York congressman, who is facing mounting legal issues and growing calls to resign for extensively lying about his resume.
Several GOP sources told CNN that the House Republican Steering Committee, controlled by Speaker Kevin McCarthy and his top allies, tapped Santos to serve on two House panels: the Committee on Small Business and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Santos had privately lobbied GOP leaders to serve on two more high-profile committees, one overseeing the financial sector and another on foreign policy, but top Republicans rejected that pitch as some chairmen balked at adding him to their panels.

Still, Republican leaders for now have decided to treat Santos like any other member of the House, even as questions grow over his past and as some have raised security concerns about allowing him to have access to classified briefings.

Rep. Roger Williams, a Texas Republican and the chairman of the House Small Business Committee for the 118th Congress, defended the decision to name Santos to his committee.

“I don’t condone what he said, what he’s done. I don’t think anybody does. But that’s not my role. He was elected,” Williams told CNN.
The controversy surrounding Santos presents an early test of McCarthy’s leadership as speaker, creating a distraction as the new GOP majority attempts to roll out its agenda. But McCarthy and GOP leaders know full well that if Santos were to resign, he’d vacate a seat in a district that President Joe Biden carried by eight points, giving Democrats a real shot at further tightening the Republicans’ razor-thin House majority.
[Image: 230117132808-taylor-greene-gosar-file-12...256,c_fill]

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar get committee assignments

Despite refusing to call on Santos to resign, McCarthy told reporters he didn’t know about Santos embellishing his resume but he “always had a few questions about it.” McCarthy said that Santos should be subjected to a House ethics probe and that it’s up to voters in his district – not lawmakers – to decide his fate.

Other top Republicans also aligned themselves with McCarthy’s position.

Indeed, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise stopped short of calling on Santos to resign, saying on Tuesday he’s been “answering some very serious questions” and now he has “to focus on the things that he promised he would do.”

Scalise added: “He ran on an agenda and he’s got to follow through – as well as answering questions that have been raised.”
Rep. Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican, who sits on the Steering Committee that names members to their spots, defended the plan to install Santos on a committees.

“In this country you’re innocent until proven guilty,” Donalds said. “There have been members who issues have come up (for) in the past. They were allowed to be on their committees, be sat on committees. And then the legal process takes hold and we make adjustments. So that’s probably what’s going to happen.”

Senior House Republicans have privately acknowledged there’s no easy way to handle the controversy surrounding Santos as they faced the decision of which committee assignments to give him. Their concern: If they were to deny him a spot now, it would set a precedent for other members who are facing intense scrutiny from the press, but have not been charged with a crime, two GOP sources said. Instead, they said, Republicans will follow the normal GOP conference procedures that would lead him to be booted from committees if he’s indicted. Yet in 2019, then-House Minority Leader McCarthy and his allies on the Steering Committee booted then-Rep. Steve King off of his committees after his racist comments came to light.

Santos' former roommate: He had 'delusions of grandeur'

But Republicans know that Santos’ problems could get worse and force them to take stronger action against him.

Santos is already facing a federal probe led by prosecutors in New York who are investigating his finances.

In a separate matter, CNN reported that law enforcement officials in Brazil will reinstate fraud charges against Santos. Prosecutors said they will seek a “formal response” from Santos related to a stolen checkbook in 2008, after police suspended an investigation into him because they were unable to find him for nearly a decade.

In an interview last month with the New York Post, Santos denied being charged with any crime in Brazil, saying “I am not a criminal here – not here or in Brazil or any jurisdiction in the world. Absolutely not. That didn’t happen.”

Santos admitted to stealing a man’s checkbook that was in his mother’s possession to purchase clothing and shoes in 2008, according to documents obtained by CNN.
