Yeah, on the one hand the courts should absolutely overturn this and make it public because it is 100% public interest. However, I have zero faith in the courts to do the right thing. So there is that.

Just another example of how the dark money and the people in the shadows are running things and given cover.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Rep. George Santos stole the identities of donors to his campaign and then used their credit cards to ring up tens of thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges, according to a new indictment filed Tuesday.

He then wired some of the money to his own personal bank account, prosecutors said, while using the rest to inflate his campaign coffers.

The 23-count indictment replaces one filed in May against the New York Republican charging him with embezzling money from his campaign and lying to Congress about his wealth, among other offenses.

In the updated indictment, prosecutors accuse Santos of charging more than $44,000 to his campaign over a period of months using cards belonging to contributors without their knowledge. In one case, he charged $12,000 to a contributor’s credit card and transferred the “vast majority” of that money into his personal bank account, prosecutors said.

Santos is also accused of falsely reporting to the Federal Elections Commission that he had loaned his campaign $500,000 when he actually hadn’t given anything and had less than $8,000 in the bank. The fake loan was an attempt to convince Republican Party officials that he was a serious candidate, worth their financial support, the indictment said.

“As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said in a statement.

Santos came out of a two-hour Republican conference at the U.S Capitol and told reporters he had no comment on the superseding indictment. “I was in conference like everyone else, without my phone, so I have nothing to say,” he said. He has previously maintained his innocence, claiming he is the victim of a “witch hunt.”

The new charges deepen the legal peril for Santos, who likely faces a lengthy prison term if convicted. So far, he has resisted all calls to resign, insisting he intends to run for reelection next year.

Santos’ personal and professional biography as a wealthy businessman began to unravel soon after winning election to represent parts of Long Island and Queens last year, revealing a tangled web of deception.

In addition to lying to voters — about his distinguished Wall Street background, Jewish heritage, academic and athletic achievements, animal rescue work, real estate holdings and more — Santos is accused of carrying out numerous schemes meant to enrich himself and mislead his donors.

He was initially arrested in May on a 13-count federal indictment, which charged him with using funds earmarked for campaign expenses on designer clothes and other personal expenses and improperly obtaining unemployment benefits meant for Americans who lost work because of the pandemic.

Free on bail while awaiting trial, Santos has described his litany of lies as victimless embellishments, while blaming some of his financial irregularities on his former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, who he claims “went rogue.”

Last week, Marks, a longtime Long Island political bookkeeper, pleaded guilty to a fraud conspiracy charge, telling a judge she helped her former boss hoodwink prospective donors and Republican party officials by submitting bogus campaign finance reports.

If he is convicted, he should resign. No different than Menendez.

On a side note, I have been told to never use Fox as a news source. I guess that means the liberals can't use:
CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, NYT and WAPO.

So please in the future find only a fair and unbiased news source.  Sarcasm Sarcasm Sarcasm

Wait, they no longer exist.

So you went back through the thread to find this post to respond to instead of the most current one with updated information?

I fail to see why I should riot (or anyone should) and why you thought to suggest such a thing.

Did January 6th teach you nothing?

Maybe there is something I'm missing, but how does someone think they are going to get away with charging thousands of dollars to someone's credit card? Sometimes I'm just really disappointed in how stupid criminals are.

A scathing Ethics committee report on Santos was released today. The committee found even more evidence of fraud and has referred that to the DOJ for additional criminal charges. He is accused of using the donor's credit card information to pay for things such as his Botox and porn. He also used "campaign" money to pay for personal expenses.

The Chair of the committee is expected to file expulsion charges against him in the next couple of days. Expulsion requires a 2/3 vote of the House and has only been successful 5 times.

With the vote margin so slim Republicans have been reluctant to expel Santos. Others, such as Democrat Jamie Rankin have been reluctant because he has only been accused of crimes and not convicted but many have also said they would reconsider based on the Ethic Committee report. So we will wee what happen. Santos has announced he will no longer seek reelection

This guy should be Trump's VP the way Biden's corrupt DOJ are after him.

Also, he says he won't be seeking reelection so I'd wager he just goes on the media circuit and becomes a political figure....unless he spent donor money on gay porn, that might be a hard thing for the right to overlook.

Alas, the GOP pushing celebrities as politicians and having politicians use the GOP as a springboard to celebrity will probably continue with this guy.  Enjoy the show, I guess.

The House has voted to make Santos only the 6th Representative to be expelled from the House.

Good, the guy is a sleazeball.  Time to kick Menendez out of the Senate now.

The house has set a new precedent, expelling a member not convicted of a crime. The senate also has a scathing report against Menendez, yet he is not being expelled.

I think Soros is guilty, I think others in Congress are also guilty of campaign fraud and other things like pulling a fire alarm. A new precedent has been set now in the house and the GOP did it at a time they have a very slim majority. Will the Senate do the same and expel Menendez prior to a conviction, but a scathing ethics report with a slim majority.

It does show one thing, the GOP was not afraid to put their majority at risk and did not play politics. Will Democrats do the same in the future?

I'm polite enough in debate to give others the plausible "out" of dismissing anything I say they don't want to consider, yes.  I'd add that this is a thread about George Santos, so how much serious energy can you give this guy?  He's so amazingly full of crap that if you gave his resume and actions to a fictitious character people would say it's unrealistically written.
