Is Macaroni and Cheese called "Mac" because Macaroni is abbreviated or is it called "Mac" because it's the first letter of each word?

Macaroni and cheese is not called "mac". "Mac" is just macaroni. "Mac and cheese" is macaroni and cheese.

Really, if you asked for Mac, you'd just get noodles and frankly, that would taste like shit!
