"Student-athlete": Manufactured BS lawyer jargon from the begining
#1
John Oliver tackled the issue of paying students athletes. One of the interesting facts he mentioned was that the term "student-athlete" was invented by the NCAA in the 50's to make sure players could never receive workers comp. After I finished watching his segment, I did a bit of research on this my self. It started after a football player from Colorado was killed by a head injury during a game. The family of the deceased player filed for workers comp for death benefits. NCAA lawyers decided that by referring to the deceased player as a "student-athlete" his legally binding scholarship where his service were exchanged for tuition credit could not be considered an employment contract. Although this was just one minor point out of Oliver's entire segment, which was equally entertaining, informative and infuriating.
