It’s stuff like this that makes me a firm believer in science. In this instance believe it or not thoughts and prayers are going to get us just as far as they have with gun violence. Which is absolutely no f*****g where.

Before we are all dead some human scientists are going to figure a way out of this.

Then preachers priests shamans rabis clerics and sheeple from every religion will thank their god/s for saving us.

And instead of changing people will go back to voting for some jackass because their views aligned on not allowing some 15 year old girl who they don’t and never will know to have an abortion because she got knocked up in high school.

While it can be annoying, it doesn’t mean people are just leaving it to God and hoping for the best. It’s a nicety,and it’s something to say. I mean there are religions that do literally leave it up to God and they’re nuts, but that’s not a lot of people.

Some are.  But there are always those who refuse to believe in science and "man made" things.

In our diocese sunday attendance is not required for now but the are leaving the church open during specific hours for anyone who wants to pray.

You know who will go and pray?

People from the most susceptible groups to get the virus who will all get together in one place.

But my facebook feed has been filled with "god has this" for a couple weeks now...by people who hoarded hand sanitizer.  I just laugh.

Yeah it's easy to say, "God has this" if you don't have a set line that constitutes success.  But I don't think most people really think like that.  They don't have something better to say.

Most people? No.  Too many.  Yep.

Our mass on Sunday (I was scheduled to read so I went) was half full...80% over 60 years old.

I just don't see how this is a viable solution to stop a highly contagious virus...

Side story, I grew up catholic and i recall being a kid and seeing all the old permanently hacking and sick old people who sat up front drinking out of the same wine goblet and I recall my mom telling me to not drink the wine. 

I confidently retorted that there was no way god would let me get sick by participating in a religious ritual and she sternly repeated to not drink the wine. 

There is plenty of stuff in the bible about not stupidly testing god, so even people who refuse to use logic are covered.

My favorite joke about the man on the roof of his house during a flood.  Three times a boat comes by with an offer to rescue him and he turns them all down saying God will take care of him.  He drowns and finds himself in heaven where he ask God why, when he had so much faith, why did God desert him.  And God says "I sent three boats."

It was a study among seminary students tasked to deliver a sermon on the Good Samaritan parable. The study’s author hired an actor to play a person in need of help and they were placed directly in the path of the student on his way to give a lecture about helping others. The ironic thing they found was if short on time, the seminary students were unlikely to provide help to a stranger even though they were on their way to give a sermon on helping strangers.

Also, on the NPR show the guest described how people how have suffered are more likely to help others compared to others that haven’t suffered.

Not to say bad things about science, but...Science also gave us nice things like nuclear weapons (and other weapons of mass destruction), DDT, psychedelic drugs, PLASTICS that form huge islands of waste in the oceans, too much carbon in our atmosphere, chemical manufacturing plants that poison almost everything around them and much much more..  In hindsight perhaps we should go back to throwing a virgin into a volcano once in awhile.
