Why is beating the Steelers such a huge deal?

Sadly, as a Bengals fan and Steeler-hater my favorite years include 2009 when we swept them and they missed the playoffs, 2012 when we beat them and so did Palmer with the anemic Raiders to help them go 8-8 and have what is like a 3-13 season for that blessed franchise, and  in 1998 when we won 3 games but 2 of them were against the Steelers.

Yeah, so be it.  We are obsessed with beating the Steelers the way the Steelers are obsessed with beating the Patriots.

Yeah I could care less about that. Look I am a Xaiver fan and I consider UC our main rivals but if you ask a Dayton fan who their main rival they would say Xaiver. If Dayton were to beat Xaiver tomorrow do you think they would give a shit about me saying UC is our main rival? Of course not because they hate our guys. Anyways if you ask a Steelers fan who their main Rival is they would probably say the Patriots and if you Ask a Patriot fan they would say the Giants. We all hate the guy who constantly beats us.

Really...it shouldn't be that big. We play them TWICE a year. We should occasionally split with them. You figure, if we win 40% of the time against them that's 2 out of 5. We should win 8 games against them in 10 years.

Of course, we all know how pathetic our record is against them. The players know too. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy where the players put a ton of importance on it and mess the game up somehow.

But...it shouldn't be that important.

Because if the Bengals win they will be 6-6 and tied with many 6-6 teams in the wild card hunt.  Since there are many 6-6 teams in the wild card hunt, falling to 5-7 ends all late season play-off come back dreams.

The Steelers are not just any team and Bengals fans have to accept they are a superior team and have been for decades.  When the Bengals entered the NFL in 1970, they had a good team but one problem. The 1970's was the decade of Steelers in the NFL.  Now the 1980's the Bengals and Browns were the dominate teams in the AFC Central. The Steelers were still a tough team to play, but you have to give the 1980's to The Battle For Ohio Winner of those years. That all ended in the 1990's and Steelers became the dominate team and have been ever since.   So except for the 1980's when Bengals and Browns were tough, the Steelers have been the dominate team in this division over Oilers. Browns, Bengals.  I do have to say the old Browns becoming Ravens have been tough and the old Brown Ravens vs the Steelers has been THE GAME in the AFC North the last 2 decades. The old Cleveland Browns in Baltimore Ravens uniforms remained tough and won Super Bowls.  The Steelers have continued to win Super Bowls.  The Bengals haven't won a play-off game since 1990 season and the New Browns never get out of last place over their first 2 decades. Many fans of the old Browns refuse to follow the lousy new Browns.  Then again many fans if the Paul Brown Bengals have lost interest in the Mike Brown Bengals.  The true elite battle in the AFC North is when the old Browns in Ravens uniforms play the Steelers.  The Browns of the 1950's to now in Ravens uniforms against the Steelers is THE GAME in the AFC North with the Steelers and Ravens winning Super Bowls.  The 2017 Steelers could win a Super Bowl this year.

So respect isn't given it is earned, and The Steelers over the decades have earned respect. Their are franchises of loaded down trophy cases such as the Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Brown/Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburg Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants and some francises with a couple trophys or at least one NFL Championship Trophy. The Bengals Trophy case remains empty. THis is why the Steelers have earned more respect in the NFL. This picture of a trophy that I use as my avatar picture may not mean squat in Cincy, but it carries a lot of weight in NFL respect. Steelers and Browns/Ravens have many of these and Bengals have none. The new Browns have never got out of last place.

If the Bengals beat the NFL Power Pittsburg Steelers and keep their hopes alive going to 6-6 on the season, IT IS IMPORTANT....If you don't see that, then you don't know the difference of beating Steelers or Patriots over beating the new Browns always in last place, and there is a difference. There has been nobody in NFL dominate like the New York Yankees in baseball or Boston Celtics in basketball, but the Steelers have one of the most filled trophy cases in the NFL with Green Bay and a select few other teams such as Patriots.

And beating them once won't earn respect. We'll need to do it for about a decade or so.

The Bears beat them...and they have 3 wins.

We SHOULD beat the Steelers nearly once a year. SHOULD.

Beating the Steelers Monday night would be a good, short-term, morale thing. But, it doesn't really mean anything in the playoff race as other teams control their own fate. The Bengals franchise must rely on several teams imploding to even have a chance. Thank you Mikey Brown. Sarcasm intended.

The expectations for this franchise are so pathetically low that we get excited at the prospect of backing into the playoffs and being squashed in first game. Thank you Mikey Brown. Sarcasm intended -- again.

Yeah beating a currently 3-9 Denver Team and a currently 0-12 Cleveland Team has our playoff hopes ramped up.

Fans are even talking about how much we improved...and maybe we have...but those are 2 of the worst teams in the league and Pittsburgh is one of the best.

I became a Bengal fan in 1968. According to your post, I was rooting for a team that did not exist. Wink

This team has played in 2 SBs, BOTH times Number #1 seeds. This team will never have a chance to win the SB WITHOUT at LEAST #2 seed. In order to get that they have to flip things and start having the same dominance over the Steelers. For me, it all starts with Thugsburgh!

It's a big deal because it rarely ever happens. If we beat them a little more often, it wouldn't be a big deal at all. But we don't beat them often, so it is.

the same reason any browns win is a big deal...

We don't beat the steelers often enough and they have long been the top dog in the division... Beating them is nice... but beating them consistently will be even better.

Long story short they have long been in our Way and beating them shows we are more on an equal level than their whipping boys.

It's a big deal for the same reason prime-time games are a big deal. Same reason why winning 1 playoff game would be a big deal.

It's about clearing that mental hurdle. This team clearly has some reason why they struggle in these 3 types of games. It's a very real problem and has been for 15 years.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.

Because:

A: They’re one of the 2 best teams in the AFC, and a legitimate threat to win the Super Bowl

B: Marvin sucks against the Steelers, and is a pathetic 2-14 at home against the Steelers. Put another way, Marvin beats the Steelers at home about 14 percent of the time. You could shoot a basketball from half court and likely make more than 14 out of 100. Marvin beating the Steelers is like making a half court heave.
Through 2023

Mike Brown’s Owner/GM record: 32 years  223-303-4  .419 winning pct.
Playoff Record:  5-9, .357 winning pct.
Zac Taylor coaching record, reg. season:  37-44-1. .455 winning pct.
Playoff Record: 5-2, .714 winning pct.
