What is a sleeper?
#1
I keep seeking Alec Pierce mentioned as a sleeper prospect. He is a likely 3rd round prospect. I get that players picked lower than 3rd rarely become starters, but 3rd rounders rarely don't make the team and 4th/5th round picks still have ~75% chance of making a roster.
FYI: IMO a sleeper is a 3rd/4th rounder who starts day 1 or a 5th or later who is a starter in their 1st contract.

I think of a "sleeper" in the NFL draft as a player that pundits and scouts are under rating or a player that others seem to overlook.   Typically, it is a player in later rounds.

I usually consider someone a sleeper who is a Day 3 pick that ends up being solid-or-better starter within a year or so.
Someone I would possibly consider a sleeper for this draft (although I keep hearing their name brought up more and more) - Cam Jurgens, C Nebraska or maybe Velus Jones, WR Tennessee (slot and returner).

Jelani Woods and Alec Pierce probably were more sleepers before the Combine, but the Combine really put a spotlight on them and now people are pushing them up their draft boards.

Pierce could be a 2nd round pick. I bet he can do more than what Cincinnati asked him to do.

A player people are overlooking. Happens every Draft.

A day 3 prospect is more my definition than say a day 2 prospect like Pierce.

As Ocho says a Cam Jurgens or Velus Jones type.

I'm going with wide receiver Thornton as the sleeper

A lot of times, a small school player fits the title of a sleeper They weren't highly recruited. The competition hasn't been as great. A guy I like is Cole Strange who played at Chattanooga and did well at the SR. Bowl and tested well at the combine.
