Coronavirus
Meanwhile the racists have started to push their agenda because they are one trick ponies.

And this will be HARD to believe but it happened under the watchful eyes of Tucker Carlson... Cool

Quote:Tens of thousands of people have expressed their outrage after Fox News and Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy both referred to COVID-19 as the "Chinese coronavirus."

The phrase was one of the top trending topics on Twitter after McCarthy tweeted out a link of tips and advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with people reacting to the racist connotations of the phrase.

"Everything you need to know about the Chinese coronavirus can be found on one, regularly-updated website," McCarthy wrote.

There have been a total of 114,457 confirmed cases of Coronavirus across the world, with more than 80,000 in mainland China, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The virus has also spread around the world to countries such as Australia, Iran, Italy and the U.S., where there have been more than 750 confirmed cases.

Thousands of people criticized McCarthy for referring to the COVID-19 as the "Chinese coronavirus," accusing him of helping to spread fear and hatred towards Asian people.

California rep. Ted Lieu: tweeted: "One reason @POTUS & his enablers failed to contain COVID2019 is due to the myopic focus on China. The virus was also carried into the U.S. from other countries & U.S. travelers. Calling it Chinese coronavirus is scientifically wrong & as stupid as calling it the Italian coronavirus.

"COVID2019 can be carried by anyone: a U.S. citizen, a Japanese tourist, an undocumented youth, or a Member of Congress. Coronavirus doesn't care about your party, gender or religion. It is not Chinese, it's a virus."

Activist and writer Charlotte Clymer added: "Republican Party is clearly coordinating messaging to call this the 'Chinese Coronavirus' in an effort to leverage xenophobic and racist nonsense and absolve Trump of his catastrophic handling of this crisis."

McCarthy also referred to COVID-19 as the "Chinese Coronavirus" in a tweet from March 1.

"Very supportive of the travel ban from Iran, as well as new restrictions to affected areas of South Korea and Italy. Though the risk remains small for Americans, the U.S. government is taking every possible precaution to keep Americans safe against the Chinese coronavirus," he wrote.

McCarthy has been contacted for comment.

If you missed the update from the admin yesterday:

1) Pence is in charge!  Buy Trump leads all press conferences so he can tell us that everything is being done perfectly.

2) Every single thing done has been "at the direction of the President"...even when he is golfing and holding fake rallies at his private resort.

3) Yes both the POTUS and the VP have been exposed to someone who tested positive for the virus but no neither has been tested.  Pence is praying it away and Trump figures all the meds for the STDS will protect him.

4) We need to bailout the hotels...which the POTUS is invested in.

5) There will be 1,000,000 test kits available VERY soon...but only 75,000 according to the CDC.

Do you really think calling it "chinese coronavirus" is racist?

Yes.

There is also a few extreme sites calling it the "yellow virus".

Just because he can doesn't mean he should. There's not a good reason for it at all.

By this point everyone knows what "coronavirus" means and there is zero need to call it that.

Naturally the defenders are yelling "Spanish Flu"!!!11!11! as a good reason for this to happen.  And, naturally, it is because they don't understand history.

The mortality rate of this thing is being far overblown because of confirmation bias in how we have tested, even in the limited testing we have done. We generally have only tested the very sick and it would logically make sense that those who are very sick have a higher chance of death than those who show absolutely no symptoms at all. I was reading yesterday that outside of Italy, who apparently their are some questions about how they are testing, other countries that are testing at a much higher rate are showing far lower mortality rates (below 2%) because the sampling better reflects the high rate of carriers who show little to no symptoms from the disease.

Now is it still as low as the flu? No. However, the thing I read yesterday was essentially saying that the current rates in other developed countries who test at a higher rate are MUCH closer to flu than other corona viruses we have seen in the past like SARS or MERS. I still believe that this overreaction is doing far more harm than good and is another result of the endless 24 hour news cycle. I was around for H1N1 and I don't remember a literal counter talking about each new case or death, it's almost like we want to think we are in a dooms day scenario.

I'm actually with you on most of this. The biggest concern for this virus is what it typically is: immunocompromised folks. Standard virus precautions will do for the majority of people is just fine. But, because of the spread, it being something new, etc., it is still good to be cautious overall.

The administration response has definitely been a cluster ****, though, with conflicting and misleading information. It makes me concerned about an outbreak of a more serious nature under this presidency.

Edit: I would like to add that according to WHO, COVID-19 is less deadly that SARS was, but is more infectious. As to the counter, that is also a result of information access. There was a running death count on the WHO website with regular updates, but information is shared more easily than a decade ago and so they have much more detailed and regular updates.

I was agreeing with a few things during the presser yesterday.  In general terms.

I mean paid time off, taking care of workers, covering the medical costs of the test. Very progressive. Smirk

Given the backstory that all DJT really cares about is how HE looks and how it affects his re-election you just have to wade through the BS and lies and hope there are some good messages in there.

On the spectrum between "licking public handrails" and "bubble boy" I think this coronavirus is somewhere closer to the handrails off of center.

But it is also to grasp history in realtime.

So it will be after this passes...and we are on to the next version...before we know how bad it was.  Unless it gets REALLY bad.

I would equate it to when Fox News used to refer to Obama as "Barack HussEIN Obama."

Is it correct to call him that? Yea.

Is that why they're doing it? No.

Interesting note I heard this morning, of the 32 U.S. deaths so far 19 have come from the same retirement home in Washington.
What happens when you elect a man who thinks he knows more than everyone about everything, who doesn't like to read, can't listen to anything that opposes his "hunches", that thinks he is a successful businessman because he was given a business and despite running it and several others into the ground keeps getting propped up by outsiders?

You get a president that thinks the Coronavirus problem can best be handled by putting people in charge that all say he's doing a great job while lying about how they are handling everything and with economic tricks.
