Harney County Judge Steve Grasty said he intends to slap Ammon Bundy and his militia group with fines to the tune of $75,000 a day for their occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge.

“It seems fair to me if you’re going to put that cost on this little tiny community...we’re broke!,” Grasty told the Daily News the day after he said he'd "send Mr. Bundy the bill" during a town meeting Monday night in Burns, Oregon, attended by roughly 200 outraged community members.

Grasty said the “bill” would be compensation for the costly increase in security in addition to the salaries of teachers and public employees who didn't go to work when schools and government buildings closed due to the occupation.

The fed-up judge said that the bill will serve to raise awareness of the burden the occupation has put on their small, rural community, not a legitimate legal recourse.


"I’m going to send Mr. Bundy a fine when we’re done. Will he pay it? No,' Grasty said to the Daily News.

Grasty also warned Oregon locals against supporting the roughly 20 militiamen occupying the bird sanctuary during his speech at Monday night's town hall meeting.

“No matter how you feel, do not bring food and supplies up to the refuge,” Grasty warned, according to KTVZ.

The town hall meeting where Grasty spoke took place the evening after the militants ramped up their presence in the remote Oregon community by clipping the wires of the fence surrounding the federal wildlife refuge’s property.


The portion of the fence Bundy and his militant group destroyed separated the federal property with land where cattle of a local ranching family graze.

“This will help them out, being able to run their ranch like they have in the past,” Bundy told the Oregonian, adding that the ranching family gave him permission to cut the fence in that location.

The group removed about 25 or 30 yards of fencing with stolen equipment from the wildlife refuge, according to the Oregonian.

The Fish and Wildlife Service released a statement condemning Bundy’s actions.


“Removing fences, damaging any refuge property, or unauthorized use of equipment would be additional unlawful actions by the illegal occupiers. Any movement of cattle onto the refuge or other activities that are not specifically authorized by the Fish and Wildlife Service constitutes trespassing," it read.

The stunt reflected the group’s grievances with the federal government’s land use policies in addition to the imprisonment of Oregon ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond last week on federal arson charges for lighting fire that spread to federal land.

Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward also spoke at the town hall meeting, warning that the militants’ stay at the refuge won't be for long.

“There’s an hourglass, and it’s running out,” he said. “Go home.”

HARNEY COUNTY, Ore. — One person is dead and several others, including Oregon occupation leader Ammon Bundy, were detained following a confrontation with the FBI and state police Tuesday night.

It all began with a traffic stop while Bundy and some of his followers were en route to a community meeting in John Day, about 70 miles away.
Shots were fired after FBI agents, Oregon State troopers and other law enforcement agencies made the stop.




Ammon Bundy, Ryan Bundy, Brian Cavalier, Shawna Cox and Ryan W. Payne were arrested during the stop.
They're all facing federal felony charges of conspiracy to impede officers of the US from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation or threats.
One person, who was the subject of a federal probable cause arrest died. It's unclear who fired first.
The arrests come on the heels of the 25th day of the refuge occupation.
Bundy and about three dozen of other individuals occupied the wildlife refuge earlier this month after two local ranchers, the Hammonds, were sent to prison for setting fires on federal land.
The Hammonds served no more than a year until an appeals court judge ruled that the terms fell short of minimum sentences requiring them to serve about four more years.
Ammon Bundy said he prayed about the matter and "clearly understood that the Lord was not pleased with what was happening to the Hammonds."
Bundy told KATU News last weekend his group had no intention of using their weapons, "but we have them, and we're willing to stand with them in our own defense as we exercise our rights, and as we restore our rights back to our brothers and sisters."

KATU News spoke with Harney County Judge Steven Grasty last weekend, who expressed his worry regarding the situation.
"Somebody will do something stupid," Grasty said. "If it goes south, it'll go south because Mr. Bundy or his friends started something."
Gov. Kate Brown had repeatedly asked for assistance from federal authorities regarding the occupation.
Several men were arrested for various traffic infractions during the occupation, but none of them were directly related to the refuge occupation.
In March 2014, Cliven Bundy was at the center of an armed standoff with federal officials over grazing rights on government land. Federal officials backed away from seizing the Nevada rancher's cattle, but the dispute remains unresolved, and the Bureau of Land Management says the family has not made payments toward a $1.1 million grazing fee and penalty bill.

He and Ryan Bundy were the only two who tried to resist arrest, leading to what sounds to be a brief shootout in which Bundy was injured (but treated and released into custody).
