Most NFL teams are getting away from carrying 3 active QB's. If the starter goes down, they can bring one up or in. If #1 and #2 go down in the same game, you just need an emergency type guy to hand the ball off and get out of that game, because a 3rd string QB is not going to bring much to the table anyway.....

I would assume base LB, pass rush specialist DE. Think Pollack, Amhad Brooks

Except don't the 49ers run a 3-4 defense primarily?
Amad Brooks lasted 2 years with the Bengals, getting 2 of his 53.5 sacks, 1 of his 12 FF, and 0 of his 3 INT.
I think this is going to be yet another Manny Lawson/Dontay Moch/Dan Skuta/Michael Johnson type move. Marvin keeps putting 4-3 DEs/3-4 OLBs in at LB in a 4-3 defense and for some reason keeps expecting different results.

Anyone wonder if we can convert one of our run stuffing DT to an offensive lineman. I always wondered why this isn't done more often DT seem to be better athletes. It seems like there is a shortage of quality Offensive lineman and an abundance of DT these days in the NFL.

I think they said Glasgow can play OG... (or maybe they got him confused with his brother...)
Last time we tried it didn't work out.. But the idea is always fun. Which DL guy would you suggest?

Not sure who all we got as UDFA
Probably someone like Glasgow, he seems like he would make a great run blocking guard. I would like to get him experience on the O-line as a way to keep him on the roster, maybe have him as a backup guard in addition to backup DT. Eventually after getting experience on the O-line he might be able to move there full time. I am guessing in high school most of these big guys played on the O-line and D-line.

I know they made me play OL and DL in jr High lol

So we're going to essentially waste Lawson's early career playing him at linebacker, where he's MUCH better suited as a DE.

I can't find anything associated with the team that lists Wilson as anything but a safety. Bengals.com roster says safety and Hobson refers to him as a safety in his articles.

They tried and failed to do that with Jason Shirley.

Maybe with Wilson, it's like listing Clark Harris as a LB. Or Devin Hester as a CB.

I don't think he's going to play the traditional linebacker role in the sense that Burfict, Vigil, Minter, and Rey will. I think he is going to be more of a rush end/LB in special packages and passing situations.
James Harrison is 2" shorter and about 15-20 lbs heavier and rushes the QB in a similar fashion. Peter Boulware was a linebacker/DE of similar size, as was Adalius Thomas. Although, Thomas was insanely fast. Both of the former Ravens players played LB/Rush DE/LB in 4-3 and 3-4 schemes with huge success. This just gives the Bengals options.
James Harrison's type of violent play style is exactly what I see when I watch Lawson. While I know the Bengals play a 4-3, they sometimes play with 5 linemen and 2 LBs quite a bit as well. There's plenty of opportunity for the "Law Dog", as I nicknamed him in another thread, to line up at OLB and then move up to the line of scrimmage and rush.
I see Lawson as more of that disrupting, rushing LB who can rush upright or with his hand in the dirt. He lined up both ways at Aurburn and did well. He's athletic enough to do so and this gives the Bengals a nasty option and a real different type of player to build certain packages around.
He is in no way big enough at 6-2 255-260 to play DE in a 4-3. His arms aren't quite long enough and his build looks to be different than a guy like Wallace Gilberry. They have the same size and weight, but Gilberry is built much differently and I think Lawson runs much better and is a better athlete.
They can always move him, too. We'll see!

Glasgow has play OG. He probably would make a nasty OG.

See, I see it as the opposite. At DE, there's no way he'd get playing time. At OLB...they could use him 10-12 times a day as a pass rusher.

It's interesting that Lawson weighs more than Willis but Lawson is listed at LB and Willis at DE. Not that I'm saying that they are in the wrong spots, but it's just not been seen around here for at least as long as I can remember.

Lawson played DE/LB in college. Plus, Lawson is only 6 foot 2. The Bengals like 6 foot 4 and up DE's.
