dline questions - Jpoore - 05-04-2017

Does it worry anybody else that we basically drafted 3-4 lbs?? Dont get me wrong love the picks, but dont seem to be a fit for what we do?? Or we just gonna rotate 10 dlineman now with atkins, dunlap, billings, johnson and willis, lawson, glasgow, hardison?? Not to mention gilberry, clarke, williams, etc. How to fit them all on the 53??

RE: dline questions - CJD - 05-04-2017

Competition is a good thing. We'll take the best 10. Chances are players like Williams don't make the cut.

RE: dline questions - SunsetBengal - 05-04-2017

Could signal a change in scheme is coming, and they wanted to have enough personnel on hand to try different things with.

Nope, not worried.

I would have been more worried if we spent another round 3-5 pick on another 6-6+ , 280lb who is simply a more average version of what we had already at DE.

I don't have a problem with more specialist type skills.  I think we have a great chance of either Willis or Lawson offering a bit more threat from the edge on 3rd down. I'm also interested to see whether Billings and/or Glasgow are real stout .vs. the run of first down.

In fact that is probably my only apprehension on the DLine this year.   As much as Peko was not liked by some (and yes most of his tackles seemed to be 3-5 yards down field)  he was a super durable vet, knew the system inside out and was clearly valued by the coaches.  We are still likely to be replacing his snaps with basically two rookies (Billings, Glasgow)

Maybe you get a trade off, where the added athleticism makes up for the lacking experience.

RE: dline questions - Au165 - 05-04-2017

I wouldn't say they are 3-4 linebackers, I'd say they are scheme versatile. Lawson probably is more of a 3-4 Linebacker, but many had Willis as a better 4-3 DE fit.

Third round pick Brandon Thompson is also in the mix for Peko's job at 6 foot 2 and 325 pounds.

Thompson is only 27 years old and he is a Sleeper that is getting overlooked by many.

They Don't..  Lawson fits in with the LB group most likely

DT

Atkins
Billings
Glasgow
Thompson

DE
Dunlap
Willis
Johnson
Clarke

I could see run stuffer Pat Sims (DT) and Wallace Gilberry (DE) sticking around also to add to your 2 Groups.

very possible  we normally keep 9 or 10 depending if we keep 6 or 7 LBers

I only listed out 8 so there is some wiggle room

RE: dline questions - jj22 - 05-04-2017

Atkins, Billings, Hardison (if healthy), are locks. Atkins needs a back up 3tech. The fourth dt position will be the run stuffer to back up Billings. It'll be between Simms, Thompson, Glasgow, and Williams. Should be a good battle.

You have 4 DT's with 3 NT and only 1 3 technique, that is an issue. Hardison or Williams make it as a back up to Geno.

There will be a lot of competition for the jobs which is Great. Plus can handle an injury or two say in Preseason with depth.

I would say that Gilberry is more on the Bubble than Pat Simms is especially with two DE's drafted.

Gilberry is 6 foot 2 and 268 pounds and Carl Lawson is 6 foot 2 and 253 pounds & can add some weight.

If they don't keep Lawson as a Linebacker but as a DE then Gilberry may be the odd man out.

In a hypothetical 3-4 look, who would be out there? I don't know a lot about 3-4 vs 4-3 from a personnel type standpoint. Would Geno be a DE?

I think Clarke gets cut

RE: dline questions - psychdoctor - 05-04-2017

I think they're going to keep just DeShawn Williams and Hardison makes it as a swing defensive line player. I think they let Clarke go this year.

hardison and Williams have don't nothing for us though.

Both are supposed to be 3 technique and would compete for the nickel DT along with Gilberry. At least one of those three makes the roster probably two.

I would think that Geno and Dunlap we be the starting ends, in a 3-4 style front.

Yep. Plus I LOVE the fact that they are speed rushers.

The big, lumbering 6 foot 7 DE's are nice to a point...but mixing in quicker speed guys is good too.
