75% of 1st time Italian voters chose populist - StLucieBengal - 03-12-2018

The elderly went for the PD. Looks like a similar breakdown as France. The youth is going populist while the elderly chose mainstream.

5 star movement got 43% of the vote and they only have been around since 2009.

The data, which was compiled by Italian polling firm SWG, shows that the vast majority of young first time voters reject the political establishment, Italian poll-tracking website Termometro Politico reports.

The populist 5 Star Movement (M5S), which has promised to implement a universal basic income and be tough on mass migration, received the most votes with close to half, or 43 per cent. Second was the right-wing populist La Lega which garnered 19 per cent of the support of the first-time voters.

The establishment left-wing Democratic Party (PD) came last with young people with a mere 12 per cent of their vote, despite numerous attempts to get the youth vote with a 500 euro “culture bonus” payment scheme.

For elderly voters the result was almost the opposite, with the PD coming in first at 26 per cent — but the 5 Star Movement did come in second with 22 per cent. SWG did not clarify what they defined as “elderly” in the polling data. The elderly group also had far more voting abstentions compared to the 18-year-olds, who had a massive 81 per cent voter participation.

While many had predicted before the election that young people were heavily leaning toward populist parties, the actual results of the Italian election sent shockwaves throughout Europe.

The centre-right coalition of La Lega, led by firebrand Matteo Salvini, and Forza Italia, led by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, came first in the election and look to govern, but did not meet the 40 per cent threshold for a majority.

Salvini had ruled out a coalition with the 5 Star Movement but said on Friday that the centre-left PD should support the centre-right platform arguing “our program has concrete and feasible proposals.”

Soooo....can you explain it because I don't know what any of that means. Populists can fall anywhere on the ideology scale. Is this left wing, right wing, middle of the road?

Right wing is probably what most here would call them

Anti eu, anti euro, anti migrant. The parties were literally raising the amount of migrants they were going to deport heading up to the election.

OK thanks.  I guess I still personally don't care all that much. LOL  That's no offense to Europeans.  I don't follow it enough to have an opinion, and what they do short of war or a military overthrow or something is up to them.

You answered your own question. If you have "left" and "right" on an x axis, populism wouldn't be on there. Imagine it being a y axis with "populism" and "elitism."

An American example would be how Bernie Sanders dominated the youth vote.

What is a 1st time italian ? There are so many italian immigrants in France that you can't count them.

Should we put them back to their country ?

BTW, italian government always has been a mess, they elected Berslusconi which is an italian Trump way before you.

And he did nothing.

Hell yeah.  We let them in this country.  Worst mistake ever.  I'm sure someone woulda thought of pizza.  Now the Irish on the other hand. That's good people.

I post on these European matters because the collapse of EU is coming and it’s quite interesting to see how it falls.

Plus I have been watching the 5 star movement grow for a few years now.

As interesting as the Muslim Caliphate that is taking over Europe?  Or the Sharia law that is taking over the United States?

First Italy fails to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 and now this. Mama mia!

Don't worry for Europe, we are doing good Big Grin

But it is nice to see analysis from some people who never put a foot here.

While I appreciate your point, that never seems to stop anyone from commenting on the United States.

Commenting is different that making false statements.

It's debating and listening to others not living in another world.

What false statements have I made on this thread? Basic polling shows that I am correct.

Since he aftermath of the Lisbon treaty plus now the mass migration these anti Eu populist parties have either been started or grown all over Europe.

Europe no doubt has a Muslim problem. Which is exactly why these parties either win or come in second in these elections.

AfD is a new party and Will now get the coverage as the opposition party in Germany since Merkel couldn’t get a ruling government without the socialists.

National Front came in second losing only the elderly. Their profile will rose as opposition party for the next electionz.

5 star movement won the most votes in Italy but can not govern so the next two parties in votes have a coalition. Those just happened to be two far right parties. Who leading up to the elections were promising to deport more migrants each week.

Not to mention we have brexit and it’s looking more and more like a hard brexit which is great.

RE: 75% of 1st time Italian voters chose populist - Belsnickel - 03-13-2018

So, out of curiosity, what makes these movements populist? What policies do they support that are populist? Have they propose populist laws or do they only give the idea lip service to gain votes? I see these as nationalist movements, but that is different than populism.
