Edit to add: Apparently, the execution hasn't been a great success. The idea is pretty awesome, though, and I'd love to see it work.

There are all sorts of wild generators out there. In Japan they have floors in an airport that generates power just from people walking on them.

There is a huge tunnel under a mountain near where I live (25E through Cumberland Gap) and the exhaust fans are driven by car traffic.

I like the concept of replacing concrete roads, parking lots and driveways with durable solar panels. They can do all kinds of things beside generate electricity. They have leds in them and do all the traffic lines and signs, they have heating elements in them that would melt ice and snow. They are modular so very easy to swap out pieces that fail.

Eventually all rooftops should be solar panels.

And the tides can be used to produce hydroelectric power. Fill pools at high tide and don't release the water until low tide. Falling water runs turbine.
