#SchumerResign - jj22 - 03-05-2020

Anyone paying attention?

Just last week Americans witnessed and ignored President Trump attacking Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor, with no backlash.

Schumer says "You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price," And not only does Chief Justice Roberts come out to rebuke him (after being silent with Trumps attacks on his fellow judges) there's the push for him to resign.

Anyone still question my long stated fact that Americans hold Democrats to  higher standards. Standards Democrats will never be able to lower enough to fight against Republicans by playing the game they play in congress or get on Trumps level to defeat Trump.

It's not even a hidden secret anymore. But will Americans change? There's been bipartisan backlash against what Schumer said, so Dems are equally at fault.

RE: #SchumerResign - CJD - 03-05-2020

For what it's worth, I think a significantly higher number want Trump to resign compared to those that want Schumer to resign.

We just aren't hashtagging Trump because we've been saying it for 3 years now.

I don't think anyone but Trump supporters/defenders ever questioned that.

But to make this a bit more precise, it is really Democrats and left-leaning independents who hold their own candidates to high standards which make this an issue.

You are right that Dems will never advance by playing the same game as Trump Republicans. But I don't see where Dems are equally at fault. Their ethics are not party-defined.

RE: #SchumerResign - hollodero - 03-05-2020

But putting all comparisons aside and stating the unpopular opinion: Schumer really should have phrased his critizism differently. "You will pay the price"... that's not ideal.

RE: #SchumerResign - GMDino - 03-05-2020

And Schumer has said he shouldn't have used those words but still for Trump of all people to say Schumer should not condemn SCJs or "endanger them" is beyond laughable given almost everything DJT says on a daily basis about his "enemies".

Trump will call someone an SOB.

Trump supporters praise his "real talk".  Trump opponents say he's awful.

A democrat will call someone an ass.

Trump supporters get up in arms about the lack of decorum and the insulting.  Trump opponents agree that it could have been said better and it should not be done.

It's fun.

We have "normalized" all the batguano crazy stuff Trump says and does but still pretend to hold EVERYONE else to some standard that DJT can't even see from where he is. That's why people not in the Cult 45 get so disturbed by it. All the press will be about Roberts making a "rare rebuke" without the context of the last three years.

Maybe we'll all be held to the same standards when/if Trump leaves office.

One questioned a dissent that was already written, and one tried to intimidate justices about a future decision with threats. And if you noticed, nobody who could consider themselves a Republican even brought it up here.

Yeah...Trump didn't call from them to recuse themselves in all future cases involving him.  Oh wait...he did.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/25/us/politics/trump-supreme-court.html

Quote:NEW DELHI — President Trump lashed out at two liberal Supreme Court justices on Tuesday, escalating his battle with the judicial system to new heights despite entreaties by his attorney general to refrain from attacks that complicate the administration’s legal fights.

Weighing in on a domestic matter as he began a day of ceremony, meetings and a joint appearance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Mr. Trump seized on a dissenting opinion last week by Justice Sonia Sotomayor and a years-old comment by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to demand that the two Democratic-appointed jurists recuse themselves from any cases involving him.

“I just thought it was so inappropriate, such a terrible statement for a Supreme Court justice,” the president said.

Besides ignoring the entreaties of Attorney General William P. Barr, the president’s attack on the two justices also risked provoking a reaction from Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. In 2018, Chief Justice Roberts admonished Mr. Trump for calling a federal judge who ruled against one of his administration’s policies, “an Obama judge.”

“We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” he said at the time. “What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.”
Kathleen Arberg, a Supreme Court spokeswoman, said Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Ginsburg and Justice Sotomayor declined to comment.

Neither of them should have said what they said.

Both men accused others of being biased.  One had the temerity to admit he chose his words poorly and the other is the POTUS who everyone will look the other way and be glad he hasn't done anything "really" stupid yet today.

Threats are threats and they are worse. Now if he said, "Recuse yourself or there will be a price to pay" then you might have something.  I'm sorry, but this time a Democrat did worse than Trump.  Except for his "what I meant".  That was definitely Trump level BS.

RE: #SchumerResign - GMDino - 03-05-2020

To further clarify Schumer was speaking to abortion choice supporters and his words seemed to imply they would continue and fight harder if the two Trump nominated judges overturned any or all parts of RvW.

So, again, poor choice of wording and a lot of pearl clutching by the right over such "dangerous" language.

But we can't go by his words...that's what Trump supporters tell me.  We have go with what is in his "heart".

Hilarious

Well.... OP did not say it could have been said better. Rather solely focused on how much worse Trump is. I'd whole-heartedly agree with that.

It would be bad though to claim that critizising Dems is out of place as long as Trump can still be considered even worse. Hypocrisy of Trump supporters is one thing. To use that as some kind of carde blanche for the own team is something else though. Yeah Dems are held to a higher standard, for that's what they should hold themselves to, also that's what they claim they are, people with higher standards than Trump. They should behave accordingly and no pointing to Trump should alter that.

Seeing it diffently would mean Trump can indeed succeed in lowering all standards, imho.

Remember when Al Franken was accused of sexual assault and THIS picture surfaced and the DEMOCRATS demanded he step down and he did. Trump has how many sexual assault cases against him? The man that says, He grabs women by the *****. The man that pays off porn stars and playboy models to keep his extramarital affairs quiet. Crickets...from the right.

Remember when Trump said 2nd amendment people could do "something" about Hillary Clinton and by something meaning that maybe one of them could exercise their 2nd amendment rights against her. A threat against her life and the Republicans did nothing and he was elected any way. Republicans bitching about Schumer can cry me a river, they're the ones that sound like snowflakes to me.

Dems have been held to higher standards long before Trump. You think they could have stolen a SCOTUS seat for example? The biggest anti-constitutional act we've witnessed in recent history until Trump was allowed to solicit foreign interference in our elections. You think Obama could be on his third marriage to a porn star after paying off a porn star and bragging about grabbing p*ssy's? He couldn't even wear a tan suit. Michele couldn't even show a shoulder without backlash. You think they would have accepted her (including "Christians") if she was a porn star with girl on girl action at that?

Until Americans quit making excuses as to why Dems can't do what Republicans do things will never change. We witnessed Dems join Republicans in criticizing Nancy for ripping up a piece of paper. Americans attack Hillary for years for using a private server as Trump and family continue to use personal cell phones and private servicers and don't even hide it.

It certainly won't change when Dems join Republicans in attacking their own as they continue to do, even as they see Republicans unquestionable defense of anything Trump. Losers. If you didn't know why, now you know, or are seeing the issue with their party and voters.

Exactly. Unfortunately you see Dems eat their own far too often. While Republicans rally around child predators running for office, and confirm SCOTUS nominees who have been accused of sexual assault. Dems would/could never. Let us not forget Clinton couldn't even have a consensual bj without getting impeached. Didn't try to stop witnesses from testifying or allow for Clinton to hide documents. Even Monica was stunned that she was forced to testify after hearing how easily Trump and co avoided it. So this has been happening for years.

The problem isn't Democrats eating their own, the problem is the Republicans rarely if ever hold their own accountable. Bill Clinton lied under oath and paid the price for it and rightfully so. Trump wouldn't testify in person to Robert Mueller, instead he and his lawyers gave carefully worded responses to some of Mueller's questions. In Trump's impeachment inquiry he tried to suppress witness from testifying and when the trial came to the Republican held senate they voted against calling witnesses at all including Trump, basically sweeping"the witch hunt" under the rug. The saddest part is, in the future, presidents, both Republican and Democrat, that get caught doing wrong will employ a lot of the same tactics the current president is/has used and gotten away with, why not? Works for him. I think the biggest fool in American history is Richard Nixon, he shouldn't have resigned, if he would've held his ground, he most likely would've been let off the hook and gotten away with it too.

RE: #SchumerResign - jj22 - 03-05-2020

Nixon probably should feel like a fool (if alive), but at least he can say he respected the office of Presidency. And I appreciate that.

I still don't think the next President (if a Dem) would get away with any of this. Only Republicans can (and do).

I agree with all of that. I just think that not criticizing anything someone from "your side" does is not the right reaction.

If it were, you'd just start a race to the bottom with zero accountability. And the only thing gained would be even more people turning away in disgust. Nothing to gain from that really.
