Robot Bomb - Bengalzona - 07-09-2016
In the Dallas episode, police used a bomb retrieval robot to bomb a shooting suspect after he had threatened to kill more police.
When did police start bombing people? Couldn't they have just used it to stun the suspect with a flashbang?
Are you comfortable or uncomfortable with this tactic?

I guess they could've used a flashbang, to stun the shooter long enough before they got close enough to fill him with bullets.

Without knowing the details, I'm not sure how safe other methods could have been. He had military training, and even with flashbangs there's some element of risk.
I think they took the safe and easy way out knowing they were saving taxpayers millions in the process. Once they determined they had all the information they were going to get or need....well, might as well move up his execution about 15 years.
He also claimed to have a bomb, so that was probably also a big factor (hoping the robot bomb would destroy any bombs he had).
I'm not exactly at ease with it. On the other hand, they obviously have had this ability for some time if they so choose. The optics aren't good, ever....but you know this guy is getting the death penalty so screw it.

Shoot, stab, harpoon, robot bomb... dont care. Eliminate the threat. When you go on killing rampages and dig in... You dont have any rights. He didnt give up or submit. He was still a threat.
Easily proper escalation of force.

I'm not too worried about what happened to this guy, but hearing he was bombed caught me off guard and I'm surprised that aspect hasn't been in the discussion at all. In general, it doesn't seem like the kind of tactics I want to police to use. It something that would be needlessly overused and likely misused, creating more problems. Either way, I'm interested in learning more about exactly what went down with this police robot bomb.

Cop killers usually don't see trial. I would say "never" but I'm sure there are a few who did.
So bomb, shoot, whatever... the guy was doomed.
I doubt they would use this tactic on usual crime suspects.
Also... could this not be a high profile message to future rouge terrorist wannabes(like the Pulse shooter)?

I don't see a difference.
When the suspect is holed up in a house alone somewhere in the countryside, should they just pound the house with a 203mm barrage and reduce it to dust?
Maybe they could just bring out an MLRS battery and reduce the whole grid square.

For some reason, I feel more comfortable with the police filling the dude with over a hundred bullets than bombing a person.

Good point about him claiming to have IED's. Best justification I've heard for the use so far.

Here's another thought.
I have always respected police officers. A big part of that respect has been because they put their lives on the line everyday.
If they stop putting their lives on the line and use robots, drones and bombs to do the dangerous work, do I have to respect them as much?

Seriously though, if they know there are no hostages present and they have a way of taking out a mass shooter that might have a bomb on him/her, they should be able to use any means necessary to eliminate the threat without endangering their lives if at all possible.

As JustwinBaby mentioned, I think that may have been the main reason they decided to bomb him.
For future reference: if you are ever surrounded by police, don't tell them you have a bomb... or you'll get blowed up!!
