Texas Student Punished for Sitting During the Pledge and, on Another Occasion, Silent - GMDino - 09-08-2016 http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2016/09/07/texas-student-punished-for-sitting-during-the-pledge-and-on-another-occasion-silently-praying/ Quote:Memorie Banks, a student in the Killeen Independent School District in Texas, got in trouble last week when she refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Has to be a satire article, right? I couldn't track it this morning. RE: Texas Student Punished for Sitting During the Pledge and, on Another Occasion, Silent - fredtoast - 09-08-2016 I think they hand out gold stars to children who pray silently in Texas public schools. From the name (Memorie Banks, really? I know we live in a world with people named Espn and poor little North West, but still ...) to being chastised for praying in a TEXAS classroom, I refuse to believe this actually happened until shown otherwise from a more reputable source. Agreed, it actually reads as an article slamming seperation of church and state. The article cites a local news station in the first sentence. http://www.kwtx.com/content/news/Mother-claims-local-girl-harassed-over-pledge-refusal-silent-prayer-392505481.html The local story refers to her first as "Melodie" and then as "Memorie" a number of times. I tend to not consider a lot of school stories as accurate. You only get one side. Schools can't always give much detail. Edit: Her name is Memorie... http://media.graytvinc.com/documents/KISD+grievances.pdf Edit: She has an IEP. School definitely won't be saying much to the media. Only during science class. Oh, snap.... Depending on the content of the IEP, they may really get taken to task for not accommodating her. I saw that link but didn't go searching to see if they picked it up somewhere else. Had a flu bug and spent most of the day in bed. Kind of a nice way to avoid the real world for a few hours! Assuming that class was the only class that could provide her accommodations and that she was not disruptive of class. |
