I don't think fans are smarter than coaches, but I do think sometimes coaches/ownership makes decisions based on $, perception and loyalty that could be detrimental to winning. Fans don't usually think with those things in mind.

That is true. Still coaches might keep their jobs and the ownership makes more $ when the team wins.
It is dumb to sacrifice winning for loyalty.
