There have been a bunch of new rules approved for next season. Some of these will affect how the team is built, coached, or played
1) Emergency QB- can be activated from PS an unlimited number of times but that elevation still counts towards the 2 PS players allowed for each game. Incentive to sign an experienced QB to place on the PS instead of a developmental player?
2) IR-2 players can now be designated for return before final cutdowns...no more tapdancing to save a guy from season-ending IR
3) trade deadline changed to after week 9
4) challenges are now allowed to determine if a QB was down or out of bounds before passing
5) a 3rd challenge is awarded after just 1 successful challenge not 2
6) play clock expiration can be challenged
7) hip drop tackled banned-lots of work for the defensive coaches to do in training camp
8) kick-offs-mirrors the XFL rules. This will add all sorts of strategic opportunities. Lots of work for Simmons and company here too
-The kicking team lines up at the receiving team's 40 and cannot move until the kick is caught or hits the ground (do they need faster guys on kick-off team?)
-The receiving team has a majority of players at their own 35 and also cannot move. The whole idea is to prevent high-speed impacts
A landing zone is set between the end zone and 20-yard line. Any kick landing here must be returned by either of the 2 players in this area. Any kick landing
short of the landing zone is considered out of bounds and results in the ball being placed at the 40.
-kicks into or out of end zone will be placed at the 30.

According to what Zac said in a brief interview on 'Movin the Chains, he seems pretty excited about the kickoff change and says that the team will have to take a closer look at how many players with KO return experience to have on the roster.

Those KO rules are nuts. Idk how it’s going to affect high impacts but now it seems like you have to direct your kicks to the lesser guy or let them try to drive 70 yards. Ball being at the 30 is crazy

Gotta Drop it in the Return zone too... kick off to far and its out to the 30. Kickers with Good Touch will be in demand over just raw power.

I think the new kick off rule will be pretty cool. The kickoff has been largely pointless for at least 10 to 15 years now. 95% of the time, the ball is either downed to start at the 25, or an overambitious kick returner tries to return it and gets maaaaybe to the 30 if they're lucky, but usually in the 15 to 25 yard range.
This will lead to more returns, more impactful returns, will make kicking off more skill intensive (you want to kick it between the 20 and 0, without kicking it into the end zone) and, hopefully, fewer injuries (due to the reduced distance between the opposing teams prior to the kick).

Ambush on side kick (Saints SB) is gone. Only 2 allowed and only in the 4th quarter.
Also squib kick is gone. The kick that if done would have erased KC 13 second moment.
Significant strategic changes to special teams.

As I understand, there is no fair catch, either. If the ball hits the ground in the "fair" zone, it MUST be returned. So a lot of pressure on both sides to not screw anything up.

Unless it rolls into the end zone after hitting the ground, in which case they get it at the 20. But yes, you can no longer fair catch the ball, especially not when you're outside of the end zone. I still couldn't believe it when I saw guys fair catch the ball at the 5 yard line and then they get it at the 25. That made no sense to me.

I think the value of a Punt Returner just went up. The new KO is just a punt.

Ahh, I missed that part. Thanks for clearing that up.

We always used to talk about guys in positions that would change things and come up with policies just to show they are doing something and to excuse the fact they are getting a paycheck. I think the competition committee is a lot like that.

usually they just make one or 2 changes and seldomly make huge changes in one fell swoop.
This year they went nuts

Beyond the kick chaos, I think two stick out.
1. The trade trade deadline move is important. We are a contender, and the more time you give other teams to figure put they are sellers only helps buyers. I get that we historically haven't been buyers, but we have made other changes to the norm, and we are in win now mode. So, if a starter at a key position goes down, we can deal mid round pick next year to help have a shot at winning a ring this year. Don't be surprised if we try to deal a 6th this year for a 5th next year as well since we only have so many spots, this helps offset a potential deadline deal. We will likely also roll over money so they'll leave a cushion for the right deadline deal.
2. The QB could go either way, but we will have on the PS. Yeah, possibly a vet to help, but could be a rookie too with the extra late round picks.

When I read in the other thread about the new Kickoffs I must of misunderstood, this actually is a lot better without being able to
call the touchbacks inside the 20. More Returns is better for the game and I guess this is safer as well, I don't hate it. Still wish we
kept it like it was before the initial change, but this is better it seems.
Banning the Hip Drop tackle is BS though and a direct punishment to Logan Wilson who John Harbuagh must of been pushing for.
I don't mind the other changes and like the trade deadline being pushed back even if we never use the trade deadline lol

Year ago, possibly. However for at least the past 10 years, the competition committee has been under duress to make changes to the game in the name of player safety while keeping the game as fair and as entertaining as possible. Do I agree with all of the rule changes over the years? Not really. Personally, I miss the days of watching vicious hits and taking out the opposing QB as a matter of strategy. However, after seeing interviews with enough of the players whom I admired while they were destroying themselves for the game, in feeble mental states and physically unable to enjoy life as they should be, I reluctantly had to admit that the changes are for the greater good.

I saw on TV today that a Team will have to Declare that they want to do an onside kick.
Then they would line up the old way at the old yard marker.
The only change to this is that Team can now put 6 players on one side of the kicker and 4 on the other.

Be a little weird seeing kickoffs from there but I get it and I'm ok with it since it will help keep the game alive.
As a returner in high school, players hitting me with a running start when I was all the way back always rang my bell for a few minutes, so I can't even imagine men that are 100 lbs heavier and five times more athletic hitting me.
As far as the hip tackle, I don't know how long that will last but, again, at least they're trying to make it safer to keep the game alive.
I like the more challenges because, even though it makes the game longer, at least they're making it more right. I do wish that they'd just have the booth looking at it from the end of the play and then just able to radio down to the officials on the field so it would eliminate him even running off the field and taking time.

I would have thought you could always challenge if a WB was down or out of bounds before passing.

I wonder what options teams have for onside kicks then with the kickoff changes?
Opps, saw this was brought up and addressed, still, specialists cannot be happy.
