It's not that absurd for people who are known for some things you'd assume would make them detestable to you are able to relate to you on a personal level. I recall reading that (hyperbole, alert) the US soldiers tasked with guarding Sadaam Hussein after his capture had to be continuously rotated because they kept becoming very fond of the guy in a close proximity situation.
This does make sense as Tucker is playing a role on television. Sure, it is presented as a news/opinion program, but it's like when people were amazed to find out Ellen is a complete monster to deal with while she's playing the role of some friendly TV personality. People who act for a living can't always be connected to the roles they play. Cue early internet memories of people saying they read that Mr. Rogers was a foul mouthed former sniper with a bunch of tattoos.
