I'm trying to get educated so pardon my question, but don't most Californians live along the coastal cities since a lot of the state is occupied by large forests and desert?

I'm seeing LA metro area has ~18.5 mill people alone.
Bay area has ~10 mill.
Those two areas alone make up about the entire population of Texas, the second-largest state by population.

It just seems like that's so many people condensed in such a small area, so property and amenities are naturally going to be higher due to supply and demand.
