When I was playing football until my early 30s, I had to eat 2-3 plates per meal, every meal, just to keep my weight from dropping. The bad part is that a few years after you stop being athletic, the metabolism slams into a wall, and everything sticks to you..
His BMR is probably around 2,200. Add in all of the exercising he is doing then he is probably around 3500-4000 for maintenance. I'm 29 and was really active up until a couple of years ago. I couldn't gain weight, man. I was eating three PBJ sandwiches for lunch, oatmeal and protein bars for breakfast, whatever the hell I wanted for dinner and ice cream/chips for dessert. Stayed at 175. I changed from a physical job to an office job, stopped playing basketball and lift four days a week with no cardio, and the weight piled on. I'm introducing cardio back to my routine and the weight is coming right back off. I love my job but man, sitting in a chair all day is killing me.
