I will say that this whole situation is very "OJ trial for white people" where if you can convince people that someone is being framed the more evidence they find is just more evidence that they are framing the guy and therefore more evidence that he is innocent. Kind of hard to convict someone when you can present the smoking gun and people will say "Boy, you're really going through a lot of trouble to make this frame-up job look like an open and shut case, aren't you?"
Yeah, the Newt Gingrich response was particularly hilarious and reflective of how many on the right view the situation. Basically he made 2 points. The first was that an indictment is basically unavoidable based on what he'd seen, so brace for it. The second was that the DOJ is basically the devil and completely out of bounds in even pursuing the case. It's quite a bit of rhetorical gymnastics.
To them the big deal is that Trump is even being scrutinized for his handling of the information, not the actual mishandling of the information.
Side note: Nothing is more fun than watching old Newtie make an ass of himself. He's been aligning himself with losing causes since the day he became a nationally relevant political figure. He's a less drunk and slightly more buttoned down Guiliani, IMO. Not many have done more to damage their own rep since leaving office. Don't worry, though, I have a feeling that DJT will soon be setting a fairly unattainable standard.
