Are they calling up the Syrian government and checking with them? I highly doubt it seeing as how the Syrian government has more pressing matters, like a civil war to attend to. And even if they could get in contact with Syrian officials, does anyone think they would tell us the truth about any of these people? It's not like we were on great diplomatic terms with them before their civil war and are on ever worse terms now since we support the government opposition. They would be more likely to intentionally give false testimony to allow someone in that would do us harm.

How can you vet someone when there is no one trustworthy that you can contact to confirm that the information they have provided is correct?

There's always some kind of a record of existence. Birth certificates, employment history, medical records, social media. It takes some digging, but it's there, even in a place undergoing as much change as Syria has in the last several years.
