I get him not wanting to do that to his guys, though.  They went through some shit, so maybe he didn't want to go to them and tell them that they just forfeited a big game.  He held strong for his players, and while I don't think letting him get by without correct consequences is OK, I don't blame him for standing up for his team, either.
